It can Jason. Just has some limitations. 1. It is a ‘one for one’ communication. There is no concept of adding a contact list or zones. You enter the specific one target radio ID for direct communication. The group ID also and similarly, with appropriate TS and CCs. You just have to keep a library of those IDs somewhere, to manually enter. If you are out in the sticks and no online access, then you better have a printed copy handy. 2. An additional item, they claim in their sales literature it comes with digital encryption. That is a half truth that I personally discovered only last night. I thought it was a bug that it wasn’t working. Apparently, it is an additional purchase. As are frequency hoping and APRS enablement. The encryption is proprietary, no biggie. But they are issuing that key, actually a pair of keys that you must purchase. I don’t think I like the fact that the key is generated by a third party, especially there. The way the CCP and PLA have their hooks in everything, no thanks!! An encryption key should be yours regardless of algorithm deployed. I hope this helps.

The antenna base external threads appear to be similar to the Motorola NMO mount. Who sells this radio?

Guohe. Chinese company that makes the Q900. Thanks for the response!! I’ll check that out.

This radio is crazy. Game changer? Looks like it.

I think it is Carey. It is still early days with it. As it’s a SDR radio, the key word there is software, which as you well know can be buggy. They are working through the bugs with subsequent software updates. I did just update the software to version 3.2.1. and it did resolve a few bugs. I was able to figure out how to do that (update software) AND I was able to figure out how to make a dongle/adapter for a real mil issue H250 handset. It’s coming along, work in progress. But still has solid possibilities. Another guy bought one, that is very close to my home. We are now good friends. Thankfully we can do some real testing. We will make and post some videos on that in the coming few weeks.

@@brianc0620 Very cool. I'll be watching its development. Thanks for a great overview of it.

@@danlandi4148 hey Dan, I was able to update it. 3.2.1 was the version the Guohe Tech gave me. The data cable head is a YC8 but the pin out is slightly different than the CAT cable that comes with the rig. The pin out is in the manual. Only real difference is that Pin 7 on the CAT cable is 5v in, where as pin 6 is used on the data cable to power the USB stick, 5v out. The software update fixed the VOX issue that is needed for APRS tethering with a droid device. The gyro issue was also fixed, now the compass is recognized by the OS. The manual program of channels, where they randomly change to garbage, still is an issue. Hope this helps. I also made a dongle to mate a real military H250 to the unit. That microphone head is a SO-12 (Weipu brand is what I used)

They are focusing on the Q900 for now. Even when they do create a package for the 119, I will still need to address how to get it uploaded to the rig. They said that the data cable that comes with the radio doesn’t work to upload binaries. I will need some type of crossover cable. That remains to be seen….

@@brianc0620 Ok, I'll wait then. I'm very interested by the 119, but considering the price, I prefer to be sure to be able to update it if needed. Again, thx for your videos 👍😁

The handset connector looks like Amphenol 91 series…. At least what I can see in your video
@brianc0620

Hey Adam. Thanks for the reply. The SA-12 connection for the microphone does appear to be amphenol 91 series but is 7 pin. I am not even remotely an SME on aviation style and specifically amphenol 91 connections, but if the 12mm head is 7 pin, is that 91 series or something else? But from an indexed, snap in type socket it is almost identical. The third video where I show a close up of the various connections may help you answer that. I also just posted a new video where I was able to make a bunch of progress on the data cable, microphone connections and the HF antenna components. Check that out and let me know your thoughts.

WOW, that is an impressive radio. I have been looking for something like that and they are very expensive, have also considered building my own. What is the price of that set up? Looks like you get everything you need.

It is (can be unless something isn’t functioning as described). Solid all in one package. That said……. As it basically is a SDR, software bugs are present. We found recently that the NFM transmission is under modulated. That means that the vocal audio is dim on transmission. Then the WFM side has very low transmission power (wattage) but the modulation audio is good. They have fixed quite a few issues/bugs, work in progress.
