The 2nd Edition assault cannon was the most brutal weapon in the game. It was basically like having a krak missile launcher with 3 sustained fire dice. Even when used against heavily armored vehicles, that many shots would eventually penetrate something and the results could be catastrophic.

I don't think GW ever quite recaptured the personality of the game after 2nd edition. Subsequent editions were fine but this stuff hits different. The only downside was game length. The old editions assumed much smaller model counts. I think it was 3rd edition where they geared the rules to sell more models. Those were the Dark Times.

@@Pengi_SMILES Definitely. It felt like a massive overcorrection to the problems people started to have with 2nd edition which really had more to do with Codex bloat than the base rules. For whatever reason, someone at GW back then decided that no one was interested on fluff and a Codex 1/3 the size would fix things. :/
@blastvader

@@Pengi_SMILES I don't really see that at all. 3rd was a bit of a golden age as far as I am concerned. There was a huge amount of narrative and campaign content as well as different ways to play. In the same way as 6th edition Fantasy, 3rd 40k seemed to be a game that the design studio really loved. Also, the armies were barely any bigger than 2nd ed ones. They just reduced the power level of characters (again, something that 6th Fantasy would go on to do). I like 2nd (it's what I started with) - But it never had anything like City Fight, Armageddon, Eye of Terror etc. (the scenario packs were great, but not quite the same).

Rats! You guys were playing that if the weapon's penetration roll equals the armor value, the shot doesn't penetrate. But on p.80 of the rulebook, it says, "If the result is equal to or more than the armor value of the area hit, the shot has penetrated." This could have made a HUGE difference for Chris, who had at least two of his penetration rolls against the marine dreadnought nullified because he rolled equal to the location's armor.

This hits me right in the nostalgia feels... Minor rules question: When you missed with the storm bolters, aren't you supposed to roll the sustained fire dice anyway to see if you jam? Kinda' the risk of shooting and all?

Nope, rules state 'If you hit'. Although I've heard of people rolling the sustained fire dice first, then rolling to hit for each available shot. Must be a house rule. I've posted a few 2nd ed bat reps if you want more!

My first 40k exposure was on the tail end of 2nd ed, I was at a gaming store playing games of magic and i was attracted to the minis so between a round of games I asked the guys playing if i could just observe their game. All I remember was some eldar scouts killing i think the driver of a space marine bike only for it to go out of control and smash into them. It would be a few months later when i would walk into a GW store and they were demoing 3rd edition when I first started haha

I loved the look of Rogue Trader, but it was a mess. I was a huge fan of the original Adeptus Titanicus and Space Marine games though. But then 2nd edition came out, I was so excited. I actually got it for my birthday. My friends loved it and I played more games of 2nd edition than I did in any other edition. I don't think you would win the masses over with the mechanics today, but it is a fun skirmish game with a lot of color and some humor. I still have my stuff along with Space Marine, Ork, Eldar, and Tyranid armies.

I never actually played this edition. I didn't know anybody that played in middle school. I had Rogue trader with my older brother and then 3rd edition when I was in high school. This is very cool! Does anybody remember which edition had the table terrain building charts or was that in fantasy?

I can't place the table terrain building charts, but Rogue Trader had everything. I've posted a few 2nd ed bat reps if you want more!

So many good memories. NGL, 2nd had...issues...but man, my friends and I played the crap out of it, including making up our own missions and such-like. Very much more wargame than RPG, but still blurred those lines and at that time we were big into tabletop RPGs.

Love seeing these older edition being played. Anyone know where the stl files for those bunkers are? would love to print some for my table.
Seeing as this is the current thing you’re obsessed with, is there any chance of doing something similar for regular Warhammer?

This flows much better than current ed., all interactions directly baked into the ruleset, no cp/strategems shenanigans, flavorful interactions with the vehicle/psyker rules. I'm sure it has it problems, too, which I'm not seeing and maybe it's my age but GW just doesn't make games like they used to.

Armor penetration on vehicles is meet-or-beat so bolters/storm bolters are capable of taking out light Ork vehicles.

its a good idea to give the marines crack grenades or they can have serious dreadnought problems, if you're playing box stuff only

The youth of today would crash the entire internet if we were still on 2nd edition. Vortex and virus grenades aside, it's worth noting that for most of 2nd ed you could not buy a Land Raider. There was no eBay, so we had to scour car boot sales and junk shops. One day my brother found one and it was like discovering the Holy Grail. Rocking up to our GW store with it painted up was like arriving in a DeLorean.
