Although not as popular in the West as Oistrakh or Kogan, Tretyakov was (and is hopefully still) immensely popular in the former socialist countries. I was blessed to hear him live at a concert in Sofia, Bulgaria, in the mid-1980s. I was conquered by the beautiful phrasing of each note, noble timbre of his violin, which he had in full command all the time, and - last but not least - his communication through music with the audience.

@3rHamm real music stopped being commercially acceptable and is fading, surviving in the barely detectable minority of the population. Thank God for the Ministries of Culture and some alternative radio stations.

Beautiful mature interpretation, without being too "schmaltzy". Lovely!! The entire work "Souvenir d'Un Lieu Cher" is one of my favourite Tchaikovsky works. Also, it's a beautifully delicate orchestral arrangement, as piano scores are not the easiest to arrange for orchestra, but I love the way the arpeggiac passages are scored, especially towards the end, with the occasional tasteful additional colouring by horn etc. (Anybody know who the arranger is?)

To think that this used to be composed for the 2nd of Tchaikovsky's violin concerto. It was ultimately taken out because it was too long.

According to Wiki, on reflection Tchaikovsky reckoned it too "slight" for his violin concerto, and so taking it out, set about composing the canzonetta that is now the second movement.
