Tchaikovsky: Symphony No. 3 in D Major, Op. 29 ("Polish")
Royal Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Sir Thomas Beecham
Recorded April 1, 8, 11 and 18, 1947, in EMI's Studio No. 1, Abbey Road, London, on Gramophone Company matrices 2EA 11806 (first part of second movement), 2EA 11826/8 (first movement), 2EA 11834/6 (fourth and fifth movements), and 2EA 11847/9 (remainder of second movement, and third movement). Issued in England, in automatic sequence only, as HMV DB 9237 through DB 9241. In the USA, the set was issued in March, 1949, as RCA Victor set M-1279 (records 12-0693 through 12-0697), and in automatic sequence as DM-1279 (records 12-0698 through 12-0702). Although RCA Victor introduced its 45-rpm system at about this same time, this recording was never issued as a 45-rpm set, and the 78-rpm version was deleted by September, 1952.
Tchaikovsky's Third Symphony is in five movements:
1. Moderato assai (Tempo di marcia funebre); Allegro brillante (at 3:15)
2. Alla tedesca: Allegro moderato e semplice (at 13:05)
3. Adagio elegiaco (at 20:12)
4. Scherzo: Allegro vivo (at 30:15)
5. Finale: Allegro con fuoco (Tempo di Polacca) (at 36:11)
None of the 78-rpm recordings of this symphony which I have heard (the others being Albert Coates' of 1932, Hans Kindler's of 1940, and Gregpr Fitelberg's of 1946) is free from cuts, and Beecham's is no exception.
Two cuts are made in the first movement: the first, of 27 bars, occurs in the development section (at 7:54), from 8 bars before fig. L to 5 bars before fig. M; the second, of 14 bars, occurs in the coda, from 10 bars after Fig. U (or, from 24 bars after U, take your pick, since it is a repeated passage that is written out in the score).
A rather more substantial cut is made in the finale, of 44 bars - the entire fugal episode, from the third beat of the bar following Fig. M to Fig. O (at 40:46).
