I've played solo through the first nine chapters of the campaign, and so far I'm digging it. I think that the campaign does a good job of alternating between longer and shorter scenarios. So far I have only run into one scenario that was frustrating in the way that several of the Imperial Assault missions are for me, but even that one was doable. I like the character/role decks, and the ability to change a character's role between chapters. In my campaign Bilbo and Gimli have switched from the suggested Burglar & Guardian roles to Pathfinder & Captain. They get to keep the old Burglar and Guardian skills that they bought with experience points though, so that RPG sense of levelling up your character is kept intact. I haven't played Mansions of Madness 2nd Ed. as many times as I have this one, but it seems like the characters are more distinct in LOTR. They have pretty much the same amount of character stats, but the LOTR character decks and card play are more interesting to me. That said, LOTR is also a bit less casual than MoM. I wouldn't hesitate to play MoM with a casual gamer, but LOTR might be a bit much for some players. Also, as Cody points out in this video, LOTR is *not* friendly to pick-up games: you can only play the current chapter in your campaign, and that's it (although you have multiple campaign slots in the app). I agree that LOTR is crying out for single-shot scenarios, perhaps with variable-experience characters.

Cody - big fan and watch all your stuff. I like that you can usually find a way to be excited about the games you cover.. your positive attitude is really refreshing. I'm also a fan of JiME. My only comment is that it seemed uncharacteristic that you recommended buying an expensive game for which (I could be wrong!) you seemed to end your review on a downbeat. Keep up the great work.

I agree with the want of single scenarios! I loathe campaign based games as I never have the time to finish a whole campaign. Not to mention so many other great games to play instead of following through an entire campaign for only one game. And about keeping both this and Mansons of Madness 2, yeah, now that this game has been released, regardless of my previous comment, I'm selling my copy of MoM simply for the exact reason he stated... I like the Lord of the Rings theme better than Cuthulu.

I don’t consider myself a “purist”, but I never got why they mixed canon characters in with original characters. I don’t feel it was necessary at all, especially when you consider a game like Imperial Assault (at least in terms of the player characters). I would rather have had an all original cast of characters.

It seems to be thing that Many people have strong opinion! Some people hate known characters and hope only see those ”unknown heroes” because gimli is not as weak than he is In the game. He was still in diversity when this happens and so on. Other players only hope to see known characters from the books because They know and love them. Not some unknown nobody that he does not care of. This game tryes to make both happy (or makes both unhappy) for different reasons :)

@@haukikannel I don't hate the canon characters. I just think that (again, taking Imperial Assault into account), why force them into a game that doesn't really need them? Imperial Assault did just fine with an all original "cast".

Yeah, but some people does and some people hate original characters. I was just speculating why Ffg did use both in this game. I for example prefer non Canon ”adventurers” in this game, because I personally like to think these to be persons to help Main heroes in their own way. But I understand why some people like Canon heroes better and I supose that is why Ffg use both in this game, so that They can get bigger total audience to this game.

@@robsevendaysaweek You need to stop with the old grandpa "get off mah lawn" attitude with this. Apps take care of a lot of boring tedious book keeping that isn't fun in board games. It also allows randomization in such a way that doesn't require a mountain of cards (like Shadows of Brimstone). There's a reason why Mansions of Madness 2nd edition is considered by everyone to be a vastly better product than the original edition. It's all due to the app. Same with Descent. As soon as they released the app for it, their sales for a very old game skyrocketed. you're doing yourself a disservice by being so bullheaded and old timer about this sort of thing. It's still a board game and there's still interaction with everyone at the table. The apps simply allow a much more complicated games to happen without complicating the rulebook.

This is your worst review. The crux in these games is actions now change the game later- how?? This needs a few examples. Given the mechanics, how does it compare to Heroes of the Mists? Do you feel you're in middle earth? You see yourself playing this a lot, but you like the theme of mom. How many missions does mom have? Literally everything you mention only raises questions..
@TheDiscriminatingGamer

Well, I can't compare it to Heroes of the Mists as I've never played it. I suppose there are many different games I could compare it to but where do you draw the line. As I've stated in the past, I like to provide brief overviews of the game rather than complete rules breakdowns. This is no different from every other game I've reviewed. Your questions seem to be specific things that you want answered, but I spoke about what I felt was relevant and important after my plays. At the end of the day my opinion is all I have to offer. Best of luck to you.
