How to use the TDS-3 device.
This device is designed to measure water salinity. Measurements of total mineralization.
The device is called TDS - Total Dissolved Solids, which in Russian means - The total amount of dissolved solids.
The device measures the total amount of salt particles dissolved in water per 1 million particles of water.
The unit of measure shown by the instrument is PPM (parts per million) or approximately 1 mg / liter.
It is used to control the level of salts and minerals in the water.
This instrument cannot measure water hardness.
Water hardness is a combination of the chemical and physical properties of water associated with the content of dissolved salts of alkaline earth metals, mainly calcium and magnesium (the so-called hardness salts), and this device measures the total amount of all salts in water.
It’s also not possible to determine the quality of water using this device. This device will not show the acidity of water or the presence of bacteria in it. It will show only the total mineralization of water.
To determine the quality of water you need to do a complete water analysis in the laboratory.
So what is this device for, or more precisely, who needs it? Basically it is used to determine the quality of the reverse osmosis systems, which are installed in plants for the purification of drinking water. The device measures the mineralization of water before and after reverse osmosis. And on the basis of these indications, it is determined whether it is time to change the membrane in osmosis or not.
Also, this device can be used to determine the level of contamination of the filter in the filter jug. Measure the water before and after filtration. And then it will be clear, it’s time to change the filter on the jug or not.
Salinity indicators for drinking water are currently controversial. Some argue that the purification of drinking water from mineral salts should be as thorough as possible and the rate of salinity should not exceed 50 mg per liter. Others adhere to the version that mineralization in drinking water is necessary, since a person gets the necessary minerals from it for his body and acceptable indicators for drinking water are up to 600 mg per liter.
The best is generally considered the average value in the range 200-400 mg of dry residue per liter.
How to use this device.
The device has three buttons. The bottom button is used to turn the device on and off. The middle button switches between two modes. Temperature measurement mode and water salinity measurement mode. The upper button "Hold" is intended for fixing the readings of the device. All these readings are shown on the display above the buttons.
If you turn on the device, it is clear that now it shows the measurement of mineralization. This is spelled PPM in the lower right corner of the screen. If you press the "temperature" button, the device switches to the temperature measurement mode. An icon in degrees Celsius appeared in the upper right corner. Now the device shows the ambient temperature. If you press the button again, the temperature will be displayed in Fahrenheit.
How do they measure the level of mineralization of water. For example, I measure the level of mineralization of tap water.
I take a glass and fill it with tap water.
I remove a protective cap from the device. Here are two metal contacts. An electric current passes between them and closes through the measured water. The conductivity of water varies depending on the amount of salts dissolved in water. The device analyzes these readings and displays them on the display as a PPM indicator.
Immerse the contacts in the water. Strongly immerse them in the water is not worth it. Hold the device in water for about 10 seconds. Also, you can lightly chat with the device in the water.
With the help of the HOLD button I fix the readings of the device. Now, if you pull it out of the water, the readings will remain displayed on the display.
We get that the mineralization level of tap water is 231 PPM. This is quite normal.
It is so easy and simple to use the TDS-meter.
In the next video, I will conduct experiments and measure the readings of not only tap water, but also water that has been purified through a filter jug. Also, I measure, readings of water directly in the reservoir, from which it is taken for the water supply system. I will measure the level of water salinity in nearby water bodies and, for comparison, measure the salinity of rainwater.
