A similar event occured at Halifax, Nova Scotia, in 1917. when an ammunition ship collided with another vessel ,leaving 2000 dead and again absolutely devastated the surrounding area.Pieces of the vessels were found miles away, the same scenario as here...RIP to both sets of victims.

There is a museum here where much of it is dedicated to the history of the disaster. Also, my grandparents had a heavy piece of the ship that had landed in their yard that day. A great aunt lost her twin toddlers when the blast pulled them out of her arms in the tidal wave and out to sea. They were watching the smoke from the fire like most of the city was, because ammonium nitrate creates a beautiful pinkish orange smoke. That's why so many were killed. They were in the direct vicinity when it happened. My grandfather had to dive under a car he was working on to avoid being cut to pieces from the massive windows in his shop shattering. He spent the rest of the day helping carry injured people to safety. It was pretty horrible. I have a video of him telling the story before he died. There is also a massive chunk of metal buried under one of the streets in town because it had landed so hard that it plunged several feet into the ground and was too heavy to get it out. So they just torched it at ground level and paved over what was left.

I had an uncle that was one of the firemen killed in that blast. He was called in early on when the fire first started, but was sent home when they thought it was controllable. He was recalled later on and was on the dock next to the ship when it exploded. His body was never found.

thank you for your video, Adam. It was very educational. I knew nothing about this disaster until I saw your video so I thank you for enlightening me about this. The explosion was so strong that it was even registered as an earthquake on a seismograph in Denver which is 900 miles away from Texas City. There was even a group of schoolchildren who went to see the fire that were killed also. Once again, thank you for this video. You packed alot in 7 minutes worth of time! The ship that in which the explosion had occurred was a grain ship, so a lot of people thought it was just some grain on fire so it should be put out shortly. Unfortunately they didn't know it was a highly flammable chemical that was stored on this ship.

Our Uncle was a young man at the time. He was half a mile away when it blew up. They found him wrapped in a chain link fence with only his underwear and one sock still on him. He lost almost all of his hearing that day. His father was killed in the factory closest to the blast. Thanks for including this in your travels.

@Pops Trains There are so many stories that are shared when those who experienced the disaster get together. They're uniquely personal and yet similar in a way that bonds those who lived it. Each time I hear a new account of someone's experience, my heart wraps around those people because I know the pain of that event. Thank you for sharing about your uncle.
