With nations now able to be represented by two flagbearers in Olympic Opening Ceremonies (1x female and 1x male) the NZOC again reached out to Master Weaver and kuia Ranui Ngarimu, weaver of our first kākahu Te Māhtonga.
Ngarimu assembled a team of 12 kairaranga (weavers) who set about hand weaving the kākahu. The base of the garment is made up of more than 37,000 whatu (weft threads) with the harakeke or flax fibres sourced from Rēkohu - the Chatham Islands.
The garment also contains almost 22,000 huru kiwi (kiwi feathers) supplied by Toi Māori Aotearoa via DOC, sourced from kiwi sanctuaries and zoos from the USA, the Netherlands, Germany, and Te Tai Poutini - the West Coast of the South Island.
