My job as a teacher is to plant seeds that someday will root, grow and flourish. I'm aware that most will whither and die, and that's OK. What are my seeds? They're the content that I teach. The collection of knowledge and skills (the outcomes) that I have used my expertise and experience to select and cultivate, based on those that I know are most REAL - relevant, engaging, applicable and likely to last a long-time.
Some want to denigrate the role of the teacher to seed dispensary, the "facilitator" who "guides on the side" by letting kids choose their own adventure, choose their own content and "self-direct their own learning." Sure there's a time and a place for this, but those times and places are far fewer than most academics and well-meaning pencil pushers would want us believe.
If you are flourishing in this digital age of individualised, self-directed learning, that's great. Lead by example But if you're like me and have serious doubts, then I encourage you to do what I did - take back control of your content, become the ruler of your empire, choose the seeds YOU want to plant and let me know the difference it makes to your teaching. I hope it's as impactful for you and your students as it was for me.
