I had a Spanish teacher like this in high school in the USA. This man gave us a workbook and then sat at his desk. You could ask questions but most weren’t even doing the work. Well, it's not that they don't do their job, it's that they don't do more than they are paid for. Which is a no go in Japanese society, especially for school teachers. And from my experience as a former student, when the english teacher doesn't do much work during classes it's because the Japanese english teacher doesn't let them. Because ''it's their class''. Japanese english teachers are often too prideful to let native english teachers teach.

Many foreign English teachers there complain about the pay but they are reasonably compensated for the amount of education they typically have. The issue I ran into is the opposite. I worked hard and help out in the class by preparing games and activities to practice the grammar the students learned. That was for my first year. Then a new teacher came and told me there was no time for any of my activities. So now, I don't really do anything. The thing to remember is that foreign English teachers are assistants, and if the main teacher doesn't instruct us to do things, or allow us to prepare our own things, there isn't much you can do. I still enjoy the job because I like helping the students learn.

That's a really.... polite (?) con. Some people are jackasses, sure, and that does reflect poorly on everyone else. But in my experience, that was relatively easy to circumnavigate. Actual cons would include: -Low pay that never increases -Low ceiling / No real career path (where you start is likely where you'll end up) -Odd working hours (depends on the institution) -You have to speak English all day, which inhibits your ability to develop your Japanese (you usually aren't allowed to speak Japanese in a classroom) If you're only looking to move to Japan, teaching English will get you there. If you're looking to *live* in Japan, teaching English is not the ideal way to go. The reason there's still demand for this job is because most people quit after a year or two.

@@benbenoy4419 I've worked as a teacher and a professional tutor for a little less than a decade, but in computer science, robotics, and math. In the US, there is almost zero prestige in any teaching role outside being a non-adjunct university professor at an Ivy League or similarly famous school, and there's not many slots open in those places at any given time. A lot of ordinary teachers have passion, but they're not all highly qualified-honestly, I feel like that describes myself and that's why I got out of the career despite loving the actual practice of teaching (I don't do classroom discipline and I couldn't see the impact of my tutoring methodologies). Quite a many teachers are *not* passionate and are just sufficient. And there are lots of teachers which are not good at the job at all, but there's such a dearth of public school teachers in that area that the school can't afford to fire them. I have friends who've done the Teach For America program, where they get employment guarantees and some amount of training/support, but the tradeoff is that they're often placed for 2 years in poor backwater schools in Bumblefuck, Middle America with no funding and struggling staff. They all hated the experience. While I don't personally know any teachers who took up the opportunity to go to Japan as an English teacher, I can totally see why teachers who live in a situation bored out of their minds in a rural Carolina or Tornado Alley small town would want to chase an equally hard experience in a more exciting place like urban Japan. Career life is hard for a lot of people. At one point in my youth, I might have agreed with your take. But at this stage, I think it only makes sense not to pass judgement on people who try, and to indeed pass judgement on institutions that don't give those trying people an adequate wage or work-life balance.

And unlike Tagalog, our mother tongue is harsh and snappy but it is also versatile enough that we can easily copy other accents like American, British, French, Latino or Russian if we really want to (though we don't do it much because a fake accent is a fake accent). So yeah apart from being a popular tourist destination,direct flights from korea and other east asian regions mean that many of their kids are sent here by their parents to learn english. ESL is a popular job for young teachers here to teach other asian kids english as a second language.

Hot take: finishing the requirements for your job is literally doing your job to the fullest. What one does on the weekend is their business.
@lianmdw

I think what he meant is that there has been many english teachers that do minimal work effort (borderline mediocre), and on weekends they behave in a way that can be disrespectful to the japanese culture. This is actually a common issue with foreigners in other countries too, and it affects the way native people perceive foreignes who actually are good citizens.

I'm not even going to argue you should care about an English teaching Job, because it sucks. But bare minimum you shouldn't pay it forward just because this part of your life sucks. Don't be a douche bag.

I am an English teacher in my own country and I love Japan. Actully it is a kinda dream for me to be an English teacher in Japan. It can be a good experience for me personally. I assume the money can be low, but it can not be as low as the money that I am receiving as an English teacher here in my country. I would like to gain more information about this topic from Takashi's channel. Thank you all.

If you’re a licensed teacher I’d encourage you to aim for a private or international school. Especially if you can also teach math or science. There’s almost always a demand for that. If you have actual teaching credentials, the role you’ll be asked to fill in public school is very unfulfilling professionally. I’ve had a lot of rewarding experiences with students there though they have rarely been in the classroom. You can make a difference and an impact but you’ll be more professionally satisfied in a setting with less limitations than public school. Maybe it would be okay for a year or two while you get your bearings in Japan and acclimatize to Japanese social and work culture. Good luck 👍🏾 hope you can make your dreams come true.

It's the same in China here, most times people here always ask if I'm an English teacher and it's annoying to say the least, but since I'm in manufacturing and exports, I don't get to mingle with them.

I would love to teach English and I would likely not go wild (not a party person) and I would even offer helping after school for some extra tutoring. I love being around kids, and I have always wanted to do this. Days off you could go explore... what a dream

I work in Tokyo as an American. Never taught English in Japan but have friends who did. Many Japanese don't take English seriously. On top of the low pay and low qualifications, is it any wonder those jobs suck? Or the fact many English teachers won't take it seriously because of the above? I think those that are under 30 and teaching English should enjoy their time in Japan before they decide on a career path. If people judge them for partying, they shouldn't be blamed for it. Those jobs are more about cultural exchange rather than being a credentialed, experienced teacher. Besides, many Japanese "professionals" that I typically work with party really hard. Many times until sunrise. I've done so myself too. We're still ok. If Japan wants to take English seriously, start by using the language more in everyday life rather than just entertainment.

Emmm not really. English Teachers suffer in japan i know because i was one. A lot of unpaid working hours and also unpaid traveling hours, too much work , no rest or vacation. We don’t have fun nor get wild because we work on weekends 🙂

Isn’t that part of adulthood esp. if you are a single young adult??? You work on weekdays and then party hard on weekends to relieve the stress. And if you are being paid the bare minimum.. It will most of the time reflect on my attitude towards work as well.

I think Japanese people have a lot of rules which aren't well known outside japan, where if they see a foreigner breaking them, they won't confront them about it. So the foreigner will keep ignorantly breaking them without any awareness of what they're doing wrong. The expectations for their behaviour can be very confusing, I've heard of english teachers being called to the principles office because they were too into teaching and were putting too much effort in, and they're only supposed to be an assistant, or class parrot/monkey maybe. Maybe they corrected the Japanese English teachers pronunciation in good faith, but it was taken badly by them. Maybe they wear perfume and no one tells them that's a big no no, so they just end up pissing everyone off everyday. It's this kind of stuff, rather than them being 'lazy'. I think it's more they're unsure of what's expected of them. What they're allowed to do, what's too far, and what's not far enough. Japanese people are not very direct about these things which can especially make things difficult when there's a big cultural difference and these things that seem obvious to Japanese people are really not obvious to a lot of foreigners.

English is a subject in school, therefore it’s just like Math. Only a few students will be interested to continue pursuing it as a career. Japan is expecting too much from a language learning system that is essentially a test-taking subject.
