Boxers are such a misunderstood breed. This video is evidence of how smart they actually are when given proper direction. I first got my Boxer when he was 9 weeks old and my 5 month old goddaughter would visit frequently. At the time, I wasn't aware impulse control was a term, but it was paramount to me that I was able to teach my Boxer puppy this otherwise he would jump and bowl over my young goddaughter. I did it with leash control and praising him to mimic my energy levels. This meant he learnt quickly that there was a time to be crazy and a time to be settled. Now he's 10yrs of and everywhere we take him in public, he gets compliments on his behaviour and sense of calm. I never have to worry about him with kids or elderly. He still is allowed to be excited and I excite him him when the time is right, but i believe it will help his heart live longer also because it's not going a million miles an hour all the time. A calm Boxer also won't overheat so quickly either so there's dividends all round!

Prince strikes me as a very intelligent dog. It's like you can see the wheels turning. "Other dog was told to sit -> other dog sits -> other dog gets YUMMY TREAT. I'm so glad to see someone training without constant reinforcement. My dog will do any trick in the book with treats, however when it comes to the things that matter like impulse control and comfortable walks together, I don't want to have to always have treats to have a stable dog. The reinforcement is the stimulating environment, there doesn't have to be additional. Never heard anyone explain reinforcement lime you do. Seeing instant results with my dog 🐕 🙌

I doubt you remember a call in Aug where you and I spoke about my then 1 year old boxer, Archie. This video is exactly what we were (and still are at times) going through. Boxers are just full of energy and they don't have an off switch. It's one reason we love them but it can be a bit much sometimes. Your advice helped (get him to a field and let him open up, establish boundaries, work on impulse control) but we are still a work in progress. I look forward to seeing more videos with Henry, especially around more advice on impulse control.

Henry is all Boxer. Playful, good nature but always looking have their way any second. I have a six year old female that I adopted and she just loves to run. Had her in the back of the car with the window open and heard some scratching. Before I could do anything she was out the window! (like Henry jumping into the pool) We were going 30 mph and she got road rash on her chin and shoulder but we got lucky and she recovered thankfully. I think she just thought it would be fun to run along side me and didn't know better. I think it's typical Boxer and I love her but was learning how far I could trust her. She had pups 4 times in her first 5 years and is very determined about doing what she wants. I think that's why she was given to me by the previous owners and she has been calming down which is good cause I don't think I could have handled her with puppy energy.

The main driver is meeting ppl or other dogs, then he's instantly losing his mind and starts screaming like being slaughtered.

I’ve raised and trained boxers for the last 2 decades. This is not unfamiliar behavior in many of the fosters I’ve taken in. My bonded pair tend to do most of the heavy lifting as it were to socialize and correct as needed unwanted behaviors. I can’t tell you how effective a leash is in correcting certain behaviors. I might also point out you were naturally giving a pressure and release, which is also quite effective. I don’t know if you get into that method in more detail in other episodes.

We get together with lots of other known dogs for joint walks in the forests, often off leash, and one of my dogs often goes nuts. I can use the leave it when he goes overboard with sniffing or humping but that’s about it. But when we leash walk home with one of the dogs and he just feels like pulling to go keep playing, that’s when I can train impulse control. I can only hope that it helps in other places down the line.
