One tip I learned from the Juliette Aristrides "Lessons in Classical Drawing" book was: when looking for the angles that you use to simplify the forms (as seen at 6:13) try to imagine the hand of a clock. This will allow you to remember the angle better than if you just use your pencil and drag it over (where slight movements can cause large distortions). So when you hold up your pencil to the reference, look at the angle the pencil's at and try to imagine where it would be on a clock. Hope that tip is helpful!

@SLEW I would have J.T. first get comfortable standing with his arm out stretched to the easel an arm distance away to get him familiar with using his whole arm for drawing. He would be just practicing loose marks for maybe 20 minutes to get his arm warmed up while learning a few looser pencil grips. Something you touched on in the video was how we are used to a tighter grip when drawing in a sketch book and on a table as opposed to standing at the easel. So making loose marks with a loose grip is what I would have him do before he even attempted the portrait. That was the first thing I noticed when watching this was that he was not actually copying you stroke for stroke because he had no frame work to begin with. Also, I would had altered all of you taking turns doing 10 second, 20 sec., 30 sec. and 1 minute poses while the other two did gesture drawings. Since you do not have models right now. You definitely want to get warmed up first and find your rhythm........ THEN you can attack the portrait with more confidence and a better sense of execution.
