Sambo guy is a strong competitor, very skilled and crafty with his technique. He never played the BJJ guy's game. Went for takedowns and stayed at the end of his legs, avoiding guard extreamly well.

I stick to BJJ now because I'm 41 years old, but I always encourage people to give Sambo a try if they really want to learn an effective self-defense and fighting style.. william mccanless Your analysis goes true for most people in general. The most important trait of any fighter gun or no gun is a killer mindset. All mental and physical things being equal having a gun is better than not having a gun. A gun in the right hands can make up for a great deal of physical disparity between two potential foes. I always carry my gun but I also walk with a low profile and steer clear of trouble. I also follow the simple gun carriers rules: Don't go to stupid places and do stupid shit with stupid people. Shalom
@jameshalleluyah8133
10 жыл бұрын
william mccanless Street fights do not start in a vacuum. Something almost always proceeds it. The only type of violent encounter that one could find himself in where almost nothing proceeds a physical confrontation is in an ambush situation. This is rare indeed but even in a situation where you are suddenly and without any warning struck or grabbed from behind having the gun is still good. At some point you might break free for a moment and be able to draw and shoot even in close quarters. The gun I carry does not have a safety to remove I simply draw and shoot and can do so in about a second under ideal conditions and probably more like 2-3 under stress. Also note that I can do this while striking with my other hand or foot as a way to make space for the draw. This is not an uncommon skill set as most people who train with their weapons learn these basic techniques. Now let's deal with the much more likely situation. What you call a street fight. I don't get into street fights. I'm not going to be hanging out with a bunch of thug friends when suddenly an argument breaks out and I have to fight someone. If I did find myself in a situation like that there are signs that proceed violence. When you see the beginning of these signs is when you make space and are ready to draw. If I noticed that an argument or other sign of violence was given I would back away from the potential threat and clear the area. If said threat closed quarters I could answer that in many different ways. My threat analysis is good and I'm confident my reaction would be appropriate to the situation. As for your arm bar situation I'm sure you could pull that off on some people but I would laugh if you tried it with me. I'm not trying to be mean or diminish your hand to hand skills it's just that bringing your hands to a gun fight is a bad way to get killed fast. Also, it seems you may be assuming that it is you who gets the first strike. If you were to come up on someone and suddenly attack them for no obvious reason I give you that you could overpower someone that way. Now let's flip the tables and say it is me who draws down on you while you are walking away and opens fire. You are also in big trouble. If you walk up to me and I sense tension and draw and shoot, you are again at a serious disadvantage. First strike is a huge advantage gun or no gun. In all cases having a gun is always better than not having one. Having a gun doesn't mean I win no matter what it means I have the best chance to win in any given situation. Hands are good, guns are better, it's why soldiers fight wars with guns not hands.

This is perfect example of what made Gracie's style so dominant in the beginning. Carlos Gracie was fighting bigger Judo players who wanted to score points and they tossed him around. So he refined his style so that he could tap them out and win! It was something that most schools just were not doing. They then turned that idea into a worldwide phenomenon. It was actually pretty genius. You can see the similarities in techniques here. BJJ and Sambo came from Judo. And Judo was a refinement of combat Jujitsu which Dr. Kano developed because he didn't like getting pushed around by bigger guys either! Whats different here is that Sambo and Judo both became more point based over time. Whereas BJJ is all about a definitive finish. Which is why I think so many people like it.

they're specialists at one thing, which makes them excel at that one thing and suck at everything else. The trick of fighting a BJJ guy is to know what game BJJ guys like to play, and play every other game. If he wants to lay down, let him do that, then make him get up repeatedly until he doesn't lay down fast enough to avoid the throw/takedown that'll give you the advantage.

Easy fellas....there's lots of bjj games and lots of bjj schools. The style that my school teaches has lots of judo take downs in it....osoto, ogoshi, Uchimata, de ashi etc...as well as wrestling doubles, singles...further more even our beginner class is ALL about an actual fight. Ducking under haymakers, clinches, jab fakes to double legs, striking distance management etc etc. Don't assume we're all sport oriented "guard pullers." We do tend to excel at just one thing ..but that does always make just crap at everything else. And technically your advice applies to all arts. "You want to beat a boxer? Be good at all disciplines a boxer isn't" Well no shit lol. No one can be elite at everything. Even among elite mma fighters....they all have their strengths and weaknesses. Isn't it the goal of every martial art to keep your opponent in your speciality and not theirs? It's also easy to rag on this guy for getting thrown a few times by the sambo guy, clearly his gi takedowns are not as good as the sambo practitioner. But the guys only a purple belt lol, and he still looks like a killer once they got to the ground. I practice bjj and I better hope my throw knocks him out because he looks like a load to handle on the ground.

This "Crouching Tiger" strategy can only work so decent on the soft tatami, in a nice and fair one-on-one competition.

I guess its kinda obvious what the easy solution is when someone on the streets is fighting you and he goes down laying on the ground with his legs wide open as a guard :p

+Sir Simon Oh! That took me like 6 times reading it to figure out what the hell you were saying. But yeah, you wipe out the equalizer and blast him!! BAMM!! Let's see now, the older brother of the two brothers, the Boston Marathon Bombers, was an MMA guy. Now, how well did it work out for him when he took the BJJ position and went down on the ground? Oh yeah!! His younger brother ran him over and killed him!!!! Michelin on BJJ time!!!!

These types of videos have the wrong title, you should never say "This style of martial arts" vs. "This style of martial arts" it comes down to the specific fighters and their disciplines. There are way to many factors of the specific fight to say that one style is better.

@kduffin33

whens the last time you saw two people get into an altercation and pull out their guns and have a gun fight…this is because the majority of people don't want to to kill someone and go to jail and the majority of people aren't going around packing heat…..most physical fights between adults are fist fights and learning a martial art can protect you from an attacker…. also their are plenty of places where you are not allowed to carry a gun…say your in a bar/club which is where many fights take place then your shit out of luck and even if you did have a gun are you really going to shoot the first guy who throws a punch or pushes you and starts talking trash? and don't get me wrong i am not against legally carrying guns but it is a tool that should only be used for deadly situations when you feel that your life or families life is in danger. and if the situation isn't that serious then you should have other tools (martial arts) to defend yourself.

kduffin33 Actually the only really serious bar fight I have ever seen involved a skin head who decided to pull a knife when his fighting skills proved a poor match for the bouncers skills. My friend has a concealed carry permit and and the skin head ended up kneeling on the ground with his hands on his head with a gun covering him. So yes it does happen. If you engage in any bar fight situation you run a risk that some one will escalate. There are plenty of people who would rather kill you than lose. Just don't fight. Even if it means you "lose face" just walk away. If they don't let you that is another matter but your best bet is just never to be in a position where you might discover that some one is armed. I have at least 5 friends who have concealed carry permits and are armed at all times. 3 of them are women. I have been known to carry a blade that is just within the legal limit but I know enough about using it that the length is not an issue. My former boss kept a machete strapped to the inside door of his car. Armed people are pretty common though usually they are not the ones looking for trouble. It is not the majority you have to watch for. It is the skin head who is looking for trouble and is ready to win at any cost before he even starts you need to worry about. Fortunately skin heads are pretty uncommon. Mostly you worry about some dudes 3 or 4 friends jumping in to help. Not much you can do in those situations.

yes actually spider guard exists in old judo books. Google spider guard and click the third link. Google deep half guard judo and click the 3rd link. 50/50, de la riva, and tornado gaurd are the only 3 positions that I'm not sure about, but saying bjj is an entire martial art on it's own because of those 3 positions is like saying 10pjj is an entire martial art on it's own because of rubber gaurd, gangsta lean, and crackhead control. they are all essentially judo with slight modifications.

I am also taking BJJ, that's why i am on this video obviously, and i love the sport, but that's what it really is, a sport. I took Krav Maga for the self defense, and BJJ for the sport and tournaments. I always think its best to stay on your own to feet in any self defense scenario.

@Jehanam A rear naked choke from turtle is very popular, but there are also 1,000 other moves you could do besides that: Such as leg locks, arm locks, cloth and lapel chokes. An ankle lock was sitting there each time and he didn't go for it. His choice but there are way to many moves to say BJJ is limited.

@SUPERxROBIN What's the point if at the end of the throw you lose total control of the situation. BJJ throws are designed to land you in the proper place with the right grips for the next move. The fight doesn't end after you throw someone to the ground. That's where the fight begins as you can see here over and over again.

yeah. i agree. i feel like a lot of people are just set in their ways. learning one martial art isnt the end. for example jiu jitsu (brazillian or japanese) is dominant on ground and things like muah thai or tae kwon doe and good for striking. i wish people would just combined everything to have their own martial art rather than im only bjj and thats it. nothing else is better. its stupid.

Almost everything you see in BJJ, including the cute roll to the back from the open guard, has been done before and I would not be surprised if it is in an old judo video somewhere (spider guard is). Ryan Hall DID NOT invent 50/50, it was in prowrestling, pancrase and shooto in the 80s when guys loved to do inverted heelhooks (something illegal in BJJ and used to be legal in Judo.) At the end of the day its all grappling with different emphasis on what is legal and "important" for fighting
