I have a terrible time with heat exhaustion fishing in the Gulf. Doc told me years ago to slam a quart of Gatorade before hitting the water, then a quart every 30 minutes if no shade. If you have shade, a quart every 45 to 60 minutes depending on how much you're exerting yourself. He was right. It works. Now get to drinking!

Robert, I want you to think about support structures while you are working up there. For instance, a couple of 2 by 4s nailed across the roof about a foot from the peak on each side would have given you a platform to safely stand on. In fact, a series of 2 by 4s, maybe two feet long nailed up the face of the roof, kind of like rungs on a ladder, would let you climb up and down much more safely. I'm sure that if you think about it you could come up with many more of these kinds of things that would make the whole experience safer and more enjoyable. And another thing, lag bolt some sort of anchor to the peak. It'll give you something to tie you safety line to. Just make sure all of these things go through the rook skin and into the rafters. You can easily remove these when you are done and the nail holes will be covered by the new roof. Just something to think about. Come down one one piece please.

Consider the time of construction . Late 1800's barely 15 years after Sherman's march of destruction. The rebuilding of rail service and factories took time. It's possible the bricks could have been manufactured locally saving cost over shipping from the north. Just a thought.

In this chapter we find the Gallant Knight "Sir Robert the Brave" battling yet more demon sprites in the form of bricks, dust pixies and sweltering heat. Having faced these imps before, he knew their Achilles heel ; gentle, yet firm force and life-giving water. Princess Byrd House felt the demons take a bite of her tarnished cape as they fell to the ground powerless around her. The pain was bearable, as she knew the burden of carrying them would soon be over, and she would have a new cloak of shimmering silver. She could not speak in words, but hoped Sir Robert felt her gratitude.

I hate to correct you, but the game you're referring to is "Jenga", not "Tetris". I wonder - would a cherry-picker have the reach you need to dismantle the bricks? (They can be rented). One might come in handy when you start replacing the metal.

The way that I've always understood it is that when they fire the bricks they make basically an igloo out of wet bricks and build a fire inside of that and then let that bake and burn itself out, the bricks that have the black on them where the closest to the fire and are the hardest and the ones farther away from the initial fire are softer and tend to be the ones that erode easier.

You are getting it done. As long as you get it done and don't get hurt, its all good. The only reason to look at the comments is to see if there are any ideas you can use going forward. Next time, I would nail plywood over the windows so you don't have to worry about them, and let fly quickly to save your knees and your nerves. Also, I'd be careful about sending bricks down onto the rickety porch, since it is your escape route. Since you are reroofing it, it doesn't matter, but you could always lay some plywood on the roof to protect it if you weren't. Hire someone to put your roof on, and hire yourself on to help. Learn what you can from the process.
