Terrell, Do you know what a beaver pipe/beaver deceiver is? New Hampshire Fish and Game describes them. They allow the beaver to keep their pond but limit how high the water level can be. Installing a pipe in the break you make in the dam can keep the water flowing even if the beaver rebuilds. Fresh chewed beaver sticks make great dry (flower) arraignments. Maybe your wife can make/create a product to sell them. We have a bunch of beaver chew sticks sticking out of a basket on the mantle.

Is this being done in accordance with an ecological assessment and plan agreed and sanctioned by the owner of the land? Beaver dams create important habitats for other species, so just randomly destroying them is not helpful. It can also result in flooding and damage further afield. So people should not be doing this unless it is planned and coordinated in an ecologically sensitive way .

It’d burn most of what’s exposed and then stop a little past the surface of the dam. With bigger logs it can continue for a little bit but it’ll eventually stop. It does make the outer layer of dirt dry out which can make it a little easier to dig out but water is pretty much always working it’s way through the dam so it would eventually turn back into mud.

We have a spot on the back of a lake where a stream flows in and every April we fish for rainbows there and every year the beavers dam it up about 100 yards upstream and every year I take my mattock tool and break it open. Once the water gets flowing, the rainbows really turn on. I love doing this stuff.

These creatures are amazingly strong and superb builders. Can’t beat mother natures creations.
