For those wondering. A polyrhythm is two different time feels put together. This is a perfect example of a 6/4 shuffle groove. That would be 6 on the hi-hat over 4 beat bar. Nice job Steve!!

@SteveToccoDrummer

Ugh. I am totally self taught and terrible at explaining things from a technical/musical standpoint. I play based on 99.9% feel and intuition. With that being said, I am counting this song in 4/4 (with the snare hits on 2 and 4). Of course, the hi-hat is doing a triplet/polyrhythmic thing over the top of it. See? I suck at explaining things. Hats off to the guys in Tears For Fears, the original drummer and the people who produced this song. It's their genius at work here. I'm just a cheap copycat.
@jeffhoback7515

Oh no worries bud. I'm more of a feel player too, but I'm trying to address weaknesses like being disciplined by going through the struggles of counting and playing to a metronome. It's a slog and total brain ache, but it's starting to pay off.

@@SteveToccoDrummer polyrhythm is like doing one time signature or "beat" on one hand and doing something else in the other. To broaden your musical technical knowledge, watch vids on polyrhythms. 😊 like you i am also more of a self-taught keyboardist. A good example of polyrhythm in action aside from this is the adlib section of Michael Sembello's She's A Maniac. I can't explain it more broadly but please do watch my cover.
