@backpackingbooky - I just got myself a new QRP rig, the FX-4CR and cant wait to try it out. 20 watts as well. Also if you are in an area with no cell service you can spot yourself using APRS ;-)

@@matt.vanderhoff nice! I'll have to look up that radio. I'm not familiar with it. I am familiar with Sotamat and HamAlert which I've used. I am aware of the APRS spotting but I haven't tried it out yet. Thanks for the tip!

Tnx for the video. Question re the G-90. What are you using for the legs? Do you find it overheats and needs the fan they sell? Tnx again.

Thanks for watching! The legs are the G90-H2 from RadioOddity. They came with the radio along with the CE-19 digital interface. It was a bundle deal on their site. I have not used any fans for the radio yet and I haven't noticed any issues. That being said, I haven't used it in full sun in the middle of summer either. I also rarely activate for more than an hour. I'm sure the fan is helpful but it just depends on how you plan to use it. I tend to focus on activating during hikes or doing a day of several activations so I don't find myself running the radio long enough to need a fan. Hope that helps!

Thanks for getting back to me. Very helpful. The radio is heavy enough without adding the fan and I think the leges not only give a better viewing angle but offer some air circulation so I am going to skip the fan and do what you did and put the stand on the radio and call it good. I'm an "old timer" now so I will definitely opt for weight savings whenever I can :)

What mast and antenna are you using? Enjoyed your video. Wait no need to answer I just watched your gear video... thanks. :-) I activate POTA via jetskis in Florida (see my YT channel) but originally from Fort Wayne and went to IU. :-) First video I have seen of yours; I liked it.

17:43 I'm noticing that all of those contacts are East of the Continental Divide. What kind of conditions would it take for you to reach the West Coast? Higher elevation?
@backpackingbooky

Higher elevation is always good but typically the time of day will be a larger factor here. Power output, location (elevation/area prominence) and antenna (style and deployment) all will effect the performance of my signal but the atmospheric conditions also play a major role. I likely WAS reaching the west coast and receiving their signals too, but the signal was too faint to hear effectively. The "greyline" is the time of day around dawn and dusk where we receive the best conditions for propagation skip and is something we Hams seek out constantly. Thanks for the question!
