Ted continues to explore the concepts of jazz-blues through chord choices and progressions. Video Credits: Cesar Pineda 01/24/00
Not bad! The noise from the decayed audio track seems to be less and less towards the end.
Part 2 is the conclusion for the “Jazz-Blues” topic and picks up where Part 1 left off, with the progression of I7 |VI7 | II7 | V7, all dominant chords. This portion also deals with adding melody to the top and breaking up the chords as they are played with the right hand. Remember this from Part 1: Ted is still tuned down a ½ step from concert pitch.
Here’s a brief summary:
1. Continued chord sequence, all dominant chords ||: I7 | VI7 | II7 | V7 :||
2. Ted adds “the blue tone” on top of each chord (2:03)
3. “Lazy Blues” Jazz: A constant melody “A/B or X/Y”, alternating between two notes, demonstrating its use (3:29)
4. “The same thing with camouflage”: Arpeggiated, chords played broken up, ascending, descending randomly (5:16) - Reminds me of George Van Eps “Harmonic Unfoldment” in Part 1!
5. What Ted calls a comfortable, over-used pattern due to its “agreeable” right hand technique almost gets dismissed, but Cesar prods him to analyze it. Thanks Cesar! (6:19)
6. The phone rings, Ted answers “Are you out there, Nick?”
Hey, that’s me! I’ll have to check to see what topic my lesson was on January 24, 2000. If it is as interesting as this one, I’ll post it. Don’t be fooled! This video was significantly shorter than Part 1, but full of concepts, if applied, will take you years. Enjoy the journey! It will pay BIG dividends and YOU WILL BE the coolest, bluesy-est cat in your ‘pride’.
