Absolute masterpiece. I'm old. Seen a LOT of movies. This is one of about 4-5 that stick in the back of the brain and won't go away. Incredible from the first minute to the last.

There'll never be another movie like this one. Perfect in every sense amidst the horror of truth.

How great the film AND the director Ted Kotcheff are! Scorcese remained faithfull to the 25 years old young man he was when he watched the film. The story of the resurection of "Wake in fright" is as beautiful as the film.

I watched this when originally released & never forgot it, finally bought a cd copy on Ebay 10 years ago but find it difficult to watch as its too real & I remember Oz in the 50, 60s & 70s, used to go spot lighting for rabbits gave roos a miss, too human.

I am in awe of this movie. I remember when the book came out and paid no attention to the film release back in the day, but I discovered it 5 or 6 years ago on KZitem and have watched it at least as many times since. Excellent direction Ted and some great actors at your service. Even John Barry's soundtrack hits the mark. And yes, there is much to identify about the Australian character (of the time) in this. Highly recommended.

@Mr Oneiroman Quite right. I did follow up on John Scott's work sometime after first seeing WIF and completely forgot about him when I posted. Don't know why I had Barry on my mind. Yes, those "characters" certainly continue to persist today too.

What a guy, showed what Australia was really like in those days, a breath of fresh air for us because good Aussies hated that side of their blokey culture and are repulsed like most people by the slaughter of Roos. And later on Stallone reaping the rewards of his direction on Rambo which was a good/Bad movie but obviously all to do with TK because his other movies were terrible. With Duddy Kravitz being a brilliant masterpiece and stands the test of time.
