What I love is how little time he spent on screen and his shooting schedule was quite compressed too. (I cannot find the information now, but it was literally days. He only has a few scenes.) What a powerfully compelling character he made, with relatively few words of dialog.

@@grf15 thanks for the info i never new that. I've always said that he needed more screen in the movie but after years of watching it,wouldn't have it any other way. His spastic bug outs and racist rants combined with his insults to the "convict" has always and will always kill me. A+ acting right there!! I was introduced to Ted Levine as the character Louis instead of the Buffalo Bill character (nothing like Ted either) so as soon as i seen an interview i became a fan and started watching all his stuff. As we all know he's an educated man who is the polar opposite of Louis but you could tell he was 110%in the role. That's great acting in my humble opinion.

When you consider the movie came out in 1990, it's not surprising if Ted was 'blacklisted' in Hollywood. Things were very different back then in terms of social mores and acceptability. Someone playing a deranged serial killer wanting to be a female with some very provocative shots, would pretty much put studios off from hiring that actor. Ted was reduced to playing in bit roles like a Jean Claude Van Damme movie. Then after a long time he finally broke through with the TV series and movie roles after.. Nowadays, that wouldn't necessarily happen. Like the actor in the Dahmer series on Netflix, playing that role with some explicit scenes and overt homosexuality would not hurt his marketability at all. Whereas, if he did that many decades ago, it would blacklist him.
