Ikuyo Conant is a composer and choreographer based in Santa Cruz, CA. She is the Artistic Director and creator of the Taiko drumming group Shinsho Mugen Daiko of Santa Cruz and Monterey Bay. Ikuyo chose Taiko drumming to feel more alive. She believes we live in a modern world filled with words where we are encouraged to think rationally rather than emotionally and that there is a great need for balance between these two fundamental states of being. Ikuyo's TEDxMonterey talk focused on finding this balance, pulling us all back to the primal rhythm created through Taiko drumming. Ikuyo and the Shinsho - Mugen Daiko played a powerful piece called Sunrise. know who I am, what I am, and what I want in life. Taiko drumming prevents me from drowning in a pool of alienation, and it keeps me aligned with a sense of wholeness.
This year's TEDxMonterey inspired and engaged the Monterey community with fascinating leaders, inventors, scientists, artists, community activists and global dreamers. With an all star line up of inspirational speakers the Monterey Institute of International Studies hosted the event on April 15th, 2011 and enjoyed participation from over 400 people both in person and online. The theme of this year's TEDxMonterey was Cultivating Innovation, which dazzled the audience through the themes of question, engage and transform.
About TEDx, x = independently organized event
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
