On October 28, 2023, Teel Auctions will auction a 1939 Buick Century sedan.
The name "Century" first appeared in 1936 to imply that the car had a top end of 100 mph.
Nicknamed "The Banker's Hotrod," the Century looked like a sedate sedan but was a true high-performance car, and was considered "hot" for the day.
The engine is an inline-eight cylinder, overhead valve, 320 cid, rated at 143 horsepower, one more than Cadillac's powerful V8.
This would be the final year for the Buick headlights to be located externally.
Innovations for 1939 included the "waterfall" grill inspired by European Grand Prix racing cars of the era; the first standard turn signals in the industry; and for Buick, a 'Handishift' shifter located on the column. Previously the shift was located on the floor. The Delco radio featured the first pushbuttons and the antenna was incorporated in the running boards.
This car has several options, including a sun shield, dual side mounts, dual side mirrors and a rare heater for the interior.
