When I was growing up in the 70's, we called it powdered milk and that is all we had in the house to drink. It was a cheaper milk than fresh. We were very poor. Nowadays powdered milk is more expensive than the regular. I use it to make homemade cocoa mix and cooking in emergencies.

I am an old geezer and I remember taking a home economics class in high school. Of particular use was the explanation of measurements; e.g., how many pints in a quart. You get the idea. I remember too they taught us how to balance a checking account. Sounds pretty basic but was a great use in only a few years when I was in college. The topic I really, really wish the teacher would have made part of her curriculum: taxes. I was completely lost when I got my first job and had to select withholding amounts. Or the first year I had to file federal and state tax forms. But, by god, I can still tell you how many pints in a quart!

When I was growing up in the 1980’s, my mother made taco meat with ketchup. Most midwesterners weren’t accustomed to spicy foods. In fact, one of the first wildly known Mexican restaurants in the United States to open to non-Mexican people (remember, this was before the Civil Rights Act and businesses discriminated, including businesses that refused to serve Caucasian people) was Casa De Fritos in Disney Land which opened in 1955. That helped to launch Mexican food into the wider public in the United States. This is also why Americans believed traditional Mexican ingredients included corn chips, black olives, sour cream, and cheddar cheeses for decades; they were Americanized versions of traditional Mexican foods because they didn’t know better, and most Americans were introduced to Mexican cooking through cookbooks by Betty Crocker and Better Homes and Gardens.

@lightblueseaglass
7 ай бұрын
Yes, but I’d use two eggs because veal is more tender and has more moisture than beef. I’d also use very lean beef to restrain the beef flavor since the flavor largely comes from fat. Lastly, I’d increase the ham to 3/4 lbs, and reduce the ground beef to 1&1/4lbs of ground beef. Also, consider adding a little orange juice to the glaze to add a little extra sweetness. Good luck!

The boys were boys who identified as boys and it was common when they would go out shopping everybody would get dressed up, but when the man would go to a basketball game they would wear ties. I will be honest with y'all. I keep dry powdered milk in my kitchen for my coffee. It has no sugar (Coffee Mate and such has that High Fructose stuff) , and it does the trick when you run out of milk . I made this for a house guest once - on short notice , and they said "It tastes like DINER coffee" . Not sure if that meant GOOD or BAD. LOL. That meatloaf is gonna taste like HAM loaf with the cloves and fruit juice . Weird. I had the feeling she was gonna make traditional 1950s "meat loaf" with the tomato sauce on the top which totally fell out of favor by the 1970s . In the 1990s when I decided to go all out Vegetarian ; I had a fun "meatloaf" recipe that used bread crumbs, crushed walnuts and a can of peas ! I loved making it and it was delicious with brown mushroom gravy from scratch ! Lastly ; the turquoise Pyrex bowl has a cute pattern with pilgrims and a wheat motif. They are now "collectible" but when you find them , the have a lot of wear from the harsh dishwashing detergents back in the day when washing machines were new.
