Down + B does an attack that kills regular foot soldiers with one hit in The Manhattan Project. A + B has each Turtle do a special move. 4:16 Great explanation and analysis, Ryan. You know, that color limit is also likely why these games never supported the 4-player adaptor of the day. As a kid, I didn't realize it was a serious technical limitation that made all 4 turtles in gameplay impossible. See, the NES could support only 8 palettes at a time. 4 3-color (+transparency) palettes for foreground objects, and 4 4-color palettes for backgrounds. Cutscenes mixed foreground objects and backgrounds to use the colors the best they could.

Background colors can only be used for background, not for moving objects. And that's the problem. As is, there's 4 palettes in use for foreground things: 1) The player one turtle. (skin, outline, mask) 2) The player two turtle. (skin, outline, mask) 3) Explosions and weapons. (yes, they use the same palette - white, red, orange) 4) Current enemy type. Notice only one enemy type is onscreen most of the time, though some enemies use the "explosion" palette. The other 4 palettes are for backgrounds. Foreground objects cannot use background palettes, period. If they wanted all 4 turtles, they'd have to have enemies be turtle colored or something.
@BlueBoothStudios

Ryan's bringing up some really good, interesting topics here too, it's refreshing to hear his "sprite theory" (lol) stuff, as opposed to the typical "Fuck, fuck, fuckfuckfuckfuuuuuuucckk shittt!!!" - no offense to Mike / James of course, you guys have already talked at length about the swearing, and I totally get it - that's part of getting in to the game. But it's nice actually like, learning a little bit about the compromises and workarounds that game devs had to make, in regards to colors/sampling/sprites/even a bit about AI on NES carts. I love learning about stuff like that, I'd actually watch a few videos of Ryan just talking about that stuff, if he actually has enough to say for something like that, haha.
@fogdiver
7 жыл бұрын
lol yeah I wish they would've gone more into that sort of stuff, instead of just kind of pushing it to the side. But in the end it's their content, they can do whatever they want 😀 - and I didn't come to one of these videos expecting to learn anything to begin with, so I guess it's just a bit of a bonus, really. lol, but yeah I agree somewhat, Mike was almost like, ripping on and mocking him, in a friendly way, or course, for knowing a lot about sprite creation and stuff, instead of adding to or at least letting the interesting topics continue - but of course Mike edits the videos (or at least most of them) so he did add in a bit of visual context for what Ryan was talking about at least once, and of course he left in himself being somewhat ignorant (in the sense that he seems like he just didn't know what Ryan was talking about)

In the original Mirage TMNT comic series, April was working for Baxter Stockman as a computer programmer, but she quit and opened up an antique store. After a while she became the vigilante crime fighter called Nobody, then she discovered that she is some sort of a magical drawing come to life (it makes no sense). Since at least 1985 she has been depicted as a warrior type, and even in the Archie TMNT comic series April was trained by Splinter to be a badass, so her being trained in martial arts in the more recent shows isn't really anything new.

On the C64, each 8 by 8 pixel grid could only have 2 colors in it (called color cells). The pixel art that was done under those limitations is amazing. This was all due to limited VRAM. The C64 only had 64k of TOTAL memory, including for the screen. I don't quite understand how NES color cells work, but they were fairly similar to the C64. People programming and doing art back then, would lose their minds with the amount of RAM (especially VRAM) available on modern systems. We can actually have every pixel on a 1920x1080 display a different color, with 32-bit color, now.

There is no scanline limitation for colors on the NES, nor do backgrounds have the same palettes as sprites. There are four background palettes and four sprite palettes, which limits any particular sprite or background element to four colors and the background or sprites as a whole to sixteen colors. The reason why this game seems unusually monochrome is because it has to reserve two sprite palettes for the two possible turtles, leaving only eight colors for all of the other sprites. As for why the background colors in the snow stage looked similar to the turtle colors, that was probably a coincidence. Ryan was pretty much right about everything else he said, though.

This game is a bit harder in 2-player mode. It even retains the elevated difficulty after one of the turtles runs out of lives. Mike is basically playing this in a hard difficulty mode. I got so good at this game, I would intentionally enter two-player mode and kill off one of the turtles just to have extra difficulty. 7:00 Notice the horizontal seam in the stage just before it vertical scrolling. It even goes through the wall. I don't know how to really explain the technical reason that exists, but it has something to do with how the NES buffers the stage when scrolling. Basically, the game is switching scrolling plains on the fly. NES games can typically scroll left-and-right or up-and-down, but seldomly both at the same time. It can do it, but it's a little glitchy. This is actually the reason why there are always glitchy graphics on the right side of the screen in Super Mario Bros. 3. Ryan's commentary about NES limitations is really interesting. On the subject of flickering; it's actually worth playing this game on either the NT Mini or an emulator that increases the number of sprites per scan line, because it greatly mitigates that particular hardware limitation.

I still remember almost blistering my thumbs doing the b+a attack so much as a child. Played this all the time as an eight or nine year old.

23:45 i am surprised no one has said this in the comments, but Mike said Shrang a combination of Shredder and Krang, this is funny because they have already done this, in the TV animated series of TMNT back in 2003, Shredder was a Utrom which in that universe is basically Krangs alien race.

That polar bear boss actually reminds me of an existing character... but from Tiny Toons - there was this sunglasses-wearing, bodybuilding, muscle-flexing, Arnold Schwarzenegger-sounding white dog in the Tiny Toons show (can't get more nineties than that LOL) but I can't remember which segment he was from, maybe he showed up in the main parts of the show... I believe he was also in the NES video game ;)

Yea this game is more satisfying with the one hit kill game genie code. Still one of my favorite games of all time.

I remember one day seeing this game at the video rental store and thought i was dreaming. I loved the arcade game and never expected that this would come out on the nes. Rented it for a couple of days and played the hell out of it. I never know turtles in time was a arcade game, arcades where already death over here at the time the snes came out.

In TMNT 3, if you use down and B though out the game. Instead of giving two hits on the enemies, most enemies are killed in one shot. If you are looking for a way to save your HP though out the game use that method.
