As a 47 year old man born in 77' and a player of every console to have ever come out, I can attest that the 'blowing into the cartridge' to get it to work is indeed NOT a myth. You had to do the same thing on the original NES too. IT was a design flaw with contact based cartridge technology. The pins could sometimes have a loose pin connection and you would need to smack the sides of the console to slide them together. By blowing into your cartridge it spread fine moisture, and germs, all along the pins and helped in getting the power across them to play the game. True story. My mum came into the livingroom when I was 12 to see my smacking the NES that my dad has spent $300 on to do this exact thingt. I knew to do this as my buddies had an NES of their own that we used to play all the time. She shreikd at me 'What are you doing?' before grabbing me by the ear and pulling me away from the console. My younger brother had to explain through my much larger yells of pained protest that this WAS how you had to get the game pins to sometimes connect, and that I wasn't just in fact "hitting the machine for nothin" because I was mad or something. She still apologizes to this day when I tell this funny story as this is now a known thing with the NES and SNES.

Since then I just turned off the NES - slide the cartridge just a little bit left or right without taking it out - turned the power on - repeated the process until the game worked.

There isn't a person on this planet that could tell me that blowing in the cartridge is a myth! I never had a Super Nintendo but I still have a working NES and I could try to start a game cartridge 20 times without success. 0:44 It's not recommended by Nintendo....That doesn't mean it's a myth. If an entire generation of gamers had a cartridge didn't that boot up like it was supposed to, often with crazy graphics errors and such, then you take it out, blow in it, put it back in, and it fixes the problem, 90% of the time. That's not a myth. It's a fact. Nintendo can tell me all they want that's it doesn't work, and I will call the liars. It worked very very very often.

Classic correlation =/= causation. When take the cartridge out and put it back in, regardless of whether or not you blow on it, you're aligning the pins on the cartridge with the system in a slightly different way. It's the alignment or misalignment of the pins that determines whether or not the game's going to boot up.

Keep in mind that there was no internet whatsoever in the early 90s, so children around the world had no idea about what children in other countries were doing.
