That was sweet of them to come back with a generous tip and explain that they didn't know how to tip someone. Glad they've learned without being embarrassed .

Pay the waiters properly, living off tips is undignified for the waiters and the dinners.

In Japan, it's an insult to tip. All the overhead is calculated into the price of the items on the menu. In some states waiters/waitress are paid below minimum wage, in that case tips would be encouraged.

In a lot countries tips are an insult, however the United States isn't one of them. Dinning etiquette in Japan is irreverent since the story happened in the United States. Tips are always encouraged in North America.

@@MikeBarat-u5n The trouble is there is the expectation of an 18% tip no matter how crappy the service. When that occurs, I have occasionally asked the server what percentage tip they believe they deserve. You can imagine the response.

@@MikeBarat-u5nTipping in North America is ridiculously overdone.. employers need to pay employees a FAIR wage and stop depending on customers to make up shitty wages.

Did he recognize his own mistake? Judging and talking poorly about them, without knowing the entire situation? Hopefully he too was humbled by the situation. Look! No one owes you a tip. Its called gratuity for a reason. I worked in the restaurant industry for a few years and know what I am talking about.

I understand his frustration and all, but you never know what the person paying is going through. Maybe those were their last $100 and they wanted to treat someone to something nice or treat themselves to something nice, maybe it ended up being closer to $100 than they anticipated and didn't have additional room for a larger tip, to jump on someone online because of your "frustration" is not right and does not make you any better than the customer.

Since when is the customer supposed to add to the waiters income? Tipping is for good or excellent service! But at most businesses it is recommended on the bill as at least 20percent. I do tip but not to supplement their income but to reward their service.

I looked at a bill for a meal and saw that my wife greatly under tipped the waitress. It was an honest mistake. When I saw the waitress a few weeks later I gave her a twenty and an apology. She was happily stunned.

If you haven’t waited tables let’s go over why these teens basically screwed over their waiter! In most states a waiter is paid $2.13 an hour, that’s just to cover your taxes, you never make any real money that way. A waiter lives off of tips, however they also have tip outs they must pay. So for every $100 a waiter sales, they at a minimum will be tipping out 3%, that’s usually your cheaper restaurants like Chiles, Applebees, TGI Fridays and so on. The more higher end and the tip outs can range from 4%-6%. You will tip the busser 1-2%, the bartender 1%, some places the host 1%, and busier nights or higher end restaurants food runner 1-2%, higher end table side 1-2%. That is paid whether the waiter is tipped or not, which means the waiter pays out of pocket. These teens screwed their waiter plain and simple.

What a country. You get paid a shit wage and have to accept the price of goods isn't the price of goods because you are meant to pay more than the advertised price. I am so glad I don't live there. I tip no one for anything.
