I played 1, 2, and 3 at a friend's houses (or the arcade), but Tag was the first Tekken game I owned. It was the best launch game on PS2, and I remember how a bunch of electronics stores near me left it running on multiple TVs to show off how incredible Sony's new console was. Looking back, it's crazy how little I understood about Tekken's fundamentals. I just mashed my way through it but picked up bits here and there. And that soundtrack... it holds up so incredibly well. The opening track (0:01) and Staff Roll (12:08) are easily some of the best tracks in any video game... Anyway, great video. Amazing work as always!

The entire game is underrated being able to use two characters for different combos and outcomes is crazy let alone the fact the mechanics in the game are so deep. Tag battle is where the game shine as it shows all of its glory its about preserving its about strategy its about who counters who its about who you need to use first then last and who lives and dies. Everyone needs to check this game out i've played this game since I was 5 and honestly its one of the best fighting games I've played of all time and I've played many. Not to mention it is probably the most technical Tekken game that I know of because it matters who you pick and it matters which order you pick for example Heihachi and Paul are good rushers while Jun and Lei are really good technical but if I put Paul first with Law they can gain rage first and get double damage while I choose Heihachi next to Jun they get a special grab and they're good as switching playstyles going defensive or offensive. What about picking Kazuya who is quicker than Jin and instead of picking Devil pick Angel to remove the change lag the game is honestly amazing.

Arya, what are your thoughts on the idea of a stamina system for more modern tekken games? Considering how we always praise Tekken for its realism, it's an element which is surprisingly missing from the later installments. I believe that in MMA fights and Wrestling matches fighters are also categorized into weight classes. So technically it would make sense for a fighting game to have it as well, like street fighter for an example. But I'm sure with that would come an even larger imbalance amongst the cast in regards of Tiers and im sure that female characters in particular would suffer from that. Will you cover this topic in a future podcast ? It could be really interesting.

@Tcb bct Both T6 and T7 have their drawbacks from my perspective, but T4 is, without doubt, the one Tekken game I can unequivocally say that I have no interest whatever in playing 'for realsies' (i.e. against a human opponent). Indeed, had I been a tournament player in those days, I'm certain that I'd have been among the large number of tournament participants who said 'sod this - I'm sticking with TTT'. Why? It's all to do with movement. Movement, as far as I'm concerned, makes or breaks a Tekken game. When you almost completely destroy horizontal movement, and make it all about in-your-face, pitbull aggression, as happened with T4, is when I completely lose interest. Never again!
@davidparry5310
3 жыл бұрын
@Tcb bct 'dude the sidesteps in tekken 4 are better than in tekken 7 BTW, you actually feel more free there than in 7.' I'm on about horizontal movement, not lateral movement. The former was practically non-existent in T4. 'Also hell no that was a nice change, it made tekken feel even more realistic than it already was.' Watch a boxing or MMA match. The times when the contestants are beating seven shades out of each other actually account for the minority of the match. Most of the time is spent moving around the ring, probing each other, looking for and creating openings. That's an element of realism that was missing from the T4 system.

I think the fact that combos were simple and it had good movement and okizeme game are part of why the game was so popular and still well liked. Most of the players were kids and teens in a time where good info on the game was hard to find on the internet, and good movement and okizeme are something you can learn more intuitively in a party setting (which was how most played in the west, online wasn't a thing), while you pretty much need to lab combos. I didn't even realize how important juggles were until T6 This lead to a fuller experience of the entire game for an entry level player.

But there's always one outlier on why people like/liked T4 that you really cant take away from the game, it's because of the overall aesthetic/art direction And I'm sure TBS is going to highlight that since he and many others like the urban and gritty feel of it. Shirdel, the thing about Devil was that he wasn't really the best character in the game per se, but he was extremely effective outside of the absolutely highest level of play. Like the video said, Devil and Bruce were the "cheap" characters. I haven't played much T7 aside from the first couple of months, maybe Fahk after nerfs/hitbox fixes is a good comparison? Similar characters would be Lars in T6 and Jinpachi in Tag2, sure they weren't winning tournaments but everyone knows what they were lol. Let's just say if Angel in TTT2 had Devils TP like in beta, she wouldn't be bottom-tier.

As someone who played Tekken Tag 1 for 300+ hours at the arcades, which became one of my most played arcade Tekken games along with Tekken 5 DR, seeing this game made me feel so nostalgic because it was the time when people played games just to have fun rather than competing against each other. Tekken Tag 1 was unbalanced, but we all loved it because we played it with the experience of having fun. Winning was fun and losing wasn't a big deal. Fighting game players nowadays are so competitive; they have a hard time getting over a loss and often hold a grudge against someone they've lost to. I really enjoy seeing your detailed insights about this game. You put a lot of information that I never knew back when I still played Tekken Tag 1 regularly. I never knew the tech roll height was lower than Tekken 3, tagging in on the player 2 side was closer, and some characters having longer health than others. By the way, there are a few details that I wish you included: - The kip up ukemi, which you had to hold forward when you hit the ground, was a new mechanic in this game. - Law and Paul was the only tag team which you could do a "GREAT" combo. A combo that makes the announcer say "GREAT!!!" once you pull it off. - When you tag out after Forest Law's Poison Arrow (f+2~1) during a successful hit, the partner does an automatic running command without having to input f,f,f (or f,f,N during tag in). Doesn't apply to every tag partner, though. - You can break the "double over" stun by tagging out. Though, I'm not sure if the recovery is faster than breaking it by pressing/holding forward.

I just wish we had a Tekken like this. A bit simplier, more about neutral, not "lol I have an EX bar so I ToD you". Tekken 7 started so well and now I don´t know what to think of it but I sure don´t think is worth playing it seriously now.
@Mandarin2099

Libe Jenkins because Tag 1 is simpler, with a more equal weight between offense and defense (neutrality as you said), there is a feeling that a loss is “on you,” which is a good feeling. Whatever people want to say about tier imbalance in Tag 1, which I would argue is real but consistently exaggerated, the game just isn’t as cheesy as any Tekken which came after. I like EX bars in late phase 2d fighters, but I agree with you on this as well. In Tekken, they add room for creativity but mostly cheese as far as the impact on mind games. The same could said of walls in Tekken. Whisky straight no chaser was a good metaphor. By the way, I’ve got some classic and high level Tag 1 on my KZitem channel that you might appreciate. ✊

Yeah I hate the new designs. Over bulky kazuya, jin, heihachi, Bryan and akuma. Current Hwoarang and Chaolan are still done moderately.

Perfectly safe mid launcher? Wow, I sure am glad those aren't in the game any more.

Was this ironic? I'm pretty sure a few df2s are still -7~-9 and launch. They may not launch crouchers but still, safe mid launchers.

Incredible - always amazing content. I played T3 and TTT very casually - this provides a lot of context I didn’t have when I was younger

I love it. Please keep breaking down these old games. I'd even love to hear about mid tier characters and how tournaments at the time evolved. I love your videos because they're made by someone who really loves these games, warts and all, for others who love these games. Can't wait for the tekken 4 video.
