Over the month of July we'll take a trip back in time to revisit the various I Love Lucy/Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour/The Lucy Show programs of the black and white era of television.
The tandem of Arnaz-Ball was the single most important combination of talent, hard work and foresight the television medium has ever (and will ever) witness in a husband and wife team.
Their first endeavor, I Love Lucy, broke ground and set new standards for television comedy and general programming. Filming the show in front of a live audience would lay the groundwork for situation comedies for decades to come. In addition, their foresight into how filming and owning their own programs could someday create the potential for a 'long-tail media' off-network syndication market was truly groundbreaking. Along with all this, came a weekly comedy program that was funny, entertaining and heartwarming.
This video clip is from their original CBS broadcast back in the mid-1950s, and is a part of the DVD package of their S7/8/9 Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour. A highly recommended DVD set for any fan of television and Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz.
The people both in front of and behind the camera of the I Love Lucy Show were legendary talents, including the director William Asher. Mr. Asher would go on to become one of the most important and influential television producers of the 1960's with his own mega-hit television series Bewitched, which starred his wife, the wonderful and beguiling Elizabeth Montgomery as Samantha Stephens. We have more on that series, plus an interview with Bill Asher, in our archives from Spring 2016.
We also have quite a bit of background information on the various books and reference material about the Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz and their television programs, and that information is available here on Television Vanguard in our prior video posts from late 2015.
Much more to come on the Lucy - Desi Comedy Hour program of the later part of the 1950s.
This video clip is presented here on KZitem for the entertainment and informational value of the viewer, and no copyright infringement is intended.
