I think I heard about the whole analog to digital switch in about early 2009 or so, and I think I had asked my grandfather's friend to get me a antenna mostly because I didn't have a job mostly because I was probably just short of 13 at the time and didn't have a job at the time. I liked the idea at the time partly because I had certain stations that I was able to watch certain TV shows that weren't on the satellite that my parents were paying for at the time. Like RTV, a similarity of MTV where they broadcast old TV shows that don't air anymore, that channel was on 10.3 in my area, but that was replaced with a different type of setup probably around 2012 or 2013 or so. Another channel that is even still my favorite is qubo, which, again, in my area is on 55.2. That channel airs kids type content almost all day, there is paid programming from 1 am to probably about 6am that airs instead. There used to be a qubo night owl that aired from midnight to about 5 AM or so, but I think that eventually went the same way that RTV went.

Then I bought one YOU recommended (Clearstream 4). So COOL! So efficient I was able to connect 3 TVs without a flicker on even the weakest signals and that’s mounted IN MY CLOSET! THANKS!

Trivia: Cable came to where I was living in the early 1960s (definitely by 1964). It was the Southern Tier of New York State and we lived in a narrow valley whose alignment was between cities that had TV stations. Kids who lived high up on the hills were never wanting for friends. A few families further down the hill invested in humongous antennas mounted on tall poles in order to get "snowy" reception. There were lots of places like that. Adelphia - the 5th largest cable provider at the time of its collapse (criminal financial improprieties) - was founded in 1952 in the town of Coudersport PA which was 50 miles away.

My condo community removed our rooftop antennas about 15-yrs ago without an explanation. My only option is to use an antenna on my balcony....which I won't do just for aesthetic reasons. My other option is an indoor antenna which I purchased for about 15 bucks from CVS. I get CBS, NBC, and one 1-local channel. I also get a bunch of sub-channels. I combined this with a Fire TV stick and a SLING TV subscription for $35 per month. Not the best situation but not terrible.

OTA broadcasting has come a long way since my pre cable analog days. I've tried some antennas that I've scrounged and now my market has channels like Movies, Decades, Cozi, H&I, Laff and Me stations. Used to be you'd get the major networks, a PBS, maybe an independent station here and there, but now I'm getting 25 channels or more. Comcast can take a hike.

I have two different antennas pointed in different directions due to me being in the middle of two cities one 35 miles away the other 70 miles give or take and of course in opposite directions thus the need for two antennas.(southwest florida)I use the Winegard Platinum Series HD7694P Platinum HD Series Antenna facing north to catch the 70 mile away stations and the Clearstream 4 facing south to catch the 35 mile away stations.Between the two I get well over 60 stations some good some not so good (content wise ).I receive them on all four of my tv's via a air tv and a tablo hooked to my wireless network then thru the app associated with each one of the boxes via Roku works perfect! Can have a tv anywhere you have electricity in your house, yard etc (as long as you can receive your wireless signal)with no wires other than the main power cord. These are Roku Tv's thus no external box needed and only wire ever needed is the power cord!(unless you choose to add apple tv,chromecast, firetv etc then its basically just another power cord or in some cases they can be plugged directly into your usb port on your tv for the power if it supports that .)The best part about this system setup is I can and do Have Tv's in rooms where I nerve thought I could do to the wiring of a antenna cable to that room which could be very hard to do or impossible to do using this system you do nothing other than plug in tv!

Even faster than OTA is AM radio. Many games are fed by satellite to NYC network. National ads are added and sent back on network. AM radio is Live, few satellite links. No compression de compression. I would watch Broncos in Denver play with tv muted. KOA 85 AM for audio. Local game had network talent with network ad ons. Watching on cable was even worse. 12-18 seconds delay. My theory is Ford or Carter were the last Presedents to really address the nation live. I remember when network audio improved over analog phone lines. The downside is slow speed of light.

I dropped cable at right about 8 years ago. About 3 years ago, a new channel began broadcasting with 12 subchannels. It has 2 channel types I was missing from cable: a national news channel and a weather channel with local radar. Now it has 2 national news channels. In my area I'm able to get 48 channels (excluding 4 shopping channels and 3 or 4 duplicates, since I'm between 2 metropolitan areas). 7 PBS channels all with different programming, 6 or 7 old TV syndicated rerun channels, etc. After that last writers strike, cable programming turned to crap. History, Sci-Fi, and Weather Channel are what kept me watching cable. History barely shows documentaries any more, Weather Channel seemed to only show local-on-the-8s when they felt like it, and Syfy became the Asylum network. I was recording shows using a $100 DVD recorder so I didn't miss my favorite major network primetime shows. Now with a digital converter box, I can record shows on flash drives for way less money and way more than 8 hours of content.

Hello Antenna Man, I cut the cord about four years ago after being shafted by comcast for too long of a time. I did however keep the internet portion of the cable in order to have internet on my computer. But now comcast is steadily raising the price for the internet. What did cost me about $65.00 per month is now up to $98.97. (a side note when I first moved into my new house 14 years ago my monthly cable bill was $56.00 per month for HD TV, DVR and internet. Then it was off line much less of the time too) I still have to deal with some outages but more slow speeds that caused me to dump the TV part of the in first place. Do you have any ideas on how we OTA people can organized in order to stop this continual price gouging by the Internet Service Providers? Thank you

I cut cable 7 years ago and am satisfied. A friend of mine wanted to cut cable so I told him how I did it. Basically, he and his wife wanted to watch the cable channels they liked but pay less. I told him he should just keep cable no matter what the price. OTA is for people who are not hooked on TV and just want to watch occasionally. There are some OL options, but the cost is about half of what cable charges for a fraction of what cable offers. I have a BYGONE1 antenna mounted in the house about 12 feet up. I run wire to four TVs plus a recorder. I recently bought a couple of ANTOP boosters. This eliminated all the problems I was having with dropping channels and pixilation. (Around $35 each)

For half my life, television was free. Free, free, FREE. We got cable in '87 ($34.00/mo.), and the prices started going up. The month that I finally dropped it eight years ago, the price per month went from $77 to $91. And that price was for basic. If I bought a new antenna once a year, it would still be cheaper than having cable.

Will the Channel Master be a good choice if put in the attic? Second; I'm planning on purchasing a 40'ft TV tower for my Lakewood location which is surrounded by woods. Again thinking of a Channel Master. Do they come with a rotor or can your recommend a remote control unit that will work with it? Last; is there a wiring cable your recommend? My run for the tower will be about 80'ft so I'm guessing I will have to purchase at a 100'ft length.

Heh Tyler! Your info is clear, understandable and valuable to me. Question: I have 2 old tvs (10yrs+) and 2 new smart tvs (daughter bought them for me). I need to "cut the cord" from Fios Frontier...too expensive! My house has fiber optic coaxial lines throughout to accommodate all 4 tvs. If I take down the outside dish, leaving the dish stand as a stand for a new outdoor antenna, do I point it the same direction as the dish was pointed? Can I still hook up the existing fiber optic lines to this new antenna? There seems to be a 2 connection coax just under the roof overhang, then it runs from there down into a connection box for the Internet line, and tv line, then into the house. All tvs are working on those fiber optic lines. From this wall box, one general line runs into the house, has a splinter of 4 to connect each of the tv boxes. There is also a splinter to the router for the ethernet connection which runs to the desktop PCs. Basically, I want to disconnect the dish, and connect the existing hookup coaxials directly into the tvs, using their wiring. I have to return the set top boxes to the Frontier office. Hope you can understand me...I am in need of someone who knows these things. I hope to save some money in the process, as I live on SSDI only.
@AntennaMan
5 жыл бұрын
You would want to point the antenna in the direction of the broadcast Towers what you can find on antennaweb.org. You can use the existing coax as long as it is separate from the internet. Do not connect it if it is on the same connection as the internet because it will give you and your neighborhood problems with the antenna interfering with the internet.

Yes cable was invented here for a reason. When television first came out most areas had no problems picking up a clear signal from the TV stations. However it was nearly impossible in the Poconos and a local businessman who sold TV sets ran a cable from an antenna on a mountaintop to customers who purchased TV sets. He eventually decided to charge a monthly fee and thus cable was born.

I would not recommend an omni-directional antenna for you because you have several VHF channels in your market and none of them have good elements to pick those stations up. Nearly all of the signals come from the north west anyway so it's best to get a directional. Signal is strong so ClearStream 2V should work well to pick up most if not all of the 63 channels that broadcast 20 miles from Philadelphia.

Tyler, Thanks for your vids. I have a problem with an OTA antenna, my neighborhood association won't allow a roof antenna, so I have to go with an in the attic antenna. Can you recommend one? I'm not really sure if this will work, but I'm willing to experiment. I may have a way around the rules as they will allow satellite dishes on the eaves of my roof, but not the crest of my roof and I may be able to hide a smaller antenna inside the dish and I happen to have two mounted currently. I would have to point them northeast and east. Have you ever heard of anyone doing that? It couldn't be large and would have to be close to unseen from the street. To compound my problems I live in an area in Nevada that has hills and it seems not a clear line of site to the transmitters and I have terraced houses beside and behind mine that may be in the way of the TV transmitters as they are 5 to 6 feet higher than mine. Antennaweb.org has an even split of yellow, green and red for my local stations at my home address. I'd love to get OTA but am not sure if it's feasible. Any thoughts? Mike W in Henderson, NV 89044

First you can challenge the HOA. Federal law overrides them which you can read more about at the link below. As far as your signals yellow, green, and red are strong. You will get most of them even with an antenna mounted in the attic but you'll want a small directional such as the ClearStream 2Max or 4Max for the red coded stations. If you have problems in the attic you have the right to put it anywhere you want on the roof despite what your HOA claims. Read more about it at the link below. www.groundedreason.com/tv-antennas-fcc-hoa/

I cut the cord like 6 years ago when after many years of U-verse promising one price and charging me another and never solving the problem after many times of contacting them. One day I came home and my service was suspended; they wanted me to pay even for the month ahead. I hooked a little antenna and started picking up all these channels from the Miami and Palm Beach markets with all their sub channels in English and Spanish and others that were not in their lineup, like antenna tv and ME tv. Everything in HD for free. Actually, those companies charge you for standard tv in my opinion because they still offer them. On top of everything, some of the Spanish channels had deals with networks from other countries, so I didn't have to pay for any International package either

Yes, a dispute with the cable company often seems to be the reported reason for the initial switch. Most of the TV I watch is stuff I DVRed from the night before. This means I can start watching at 8:30PM but watch the show from its start. Also the DVR thing has a feature that lets me have it play my music out the TV when I just want background music. Another nice thing you can do with a DVR is bring the recorded video over to your computer and save it away for future reference.

I've learned a lot about antennas watching your videos the last month or so. We got rid of cable last spring. We're a Fire Stick household so it was an easy transition. At the time however, we didn't have an antenna and looking at the streaming options, I wasn't prepared to spend a couple hundred bucks in addition to Sling just so we could continue to see local stations. We opted for DirectTV Now and at the time, even with our options, it was not much over $50/mo. Still a huge savings over cable. Since then, AT&T has steadily raised their prices and now we're up to $75/mo. That got me looking into an OTA solution. We switched to Sling and bought a Fire TV Recast and an antenna. To get all the channels we like to watch, we ended up getting the Orange AND Blue packages from Sling so our monthly bill is the same but we have more channels than with AT&T TV Now and we even have more local channels because of the antenna. Thank you Antenna Man for providing your knowledge here on KZitem. I learned everything I needed to buy the right antenna for my home and my area. I've used this knowledge to question other antenna "reviewers" here in KZitem. The just talk about how good one works and then don't tell you why one doesn't work as well, which is usually based on the VHF/UHF dilemma. But without that knowledge, people aren't learning anything about antenna buying. Antenna Man is The Man! Don't give up, Tyler. You will get through your current situation. You are a valuable resource and a very much appreciated one, in my view.

A $10 antennae from Amazon worked better than the $39 antennae from Best Buy. A lot of OTA relies on weather, or placement which may be limited in some places. What you pay with cable TV is consistency, when OTA can be often times hid or miss.

Tyler, I don't remember which video it was but you showed a small outdoor antenna on the floor of your home that worked well. What kind of antenna was it? Wouldn't it work better if it was nearer to ceiling level or in a window? My signal comes from line of sight translators on a mountain about 10 miles away and I live in a one story house. Thanks, Andy

To me, saving money is not a major factor. It's being able to watch a program in the highest quality. I spent hundreds of dollars on the latest set. 4K QLED, 75 inch. The last thing I want to do is watch a compressed piece of garbage courtesy of a cable company that still hasn't gotten around to offering 4K. At least, I know in the near future, 4K will be available via ATSC 3.0. And how much you wanna guess the cable company will offer 4K programming by then, but you will have to pay for it?

Another advantage of watching the OTA channels in Canada, is that in most large urban markets, we get U.S channels as we are so close to the border. (Montreal, Toronto). So get most Canadian and American channels for free...with lots of channels not normally available in Canada. Also, American programs shown on Canadian cable companies DO NOT show American commercials. Commercial breaks are kidnapped by Canadian advertising. So we do not see the commercials during the Superbowl if watched on Canadian cable channels

Learn how to turn off the channels you don't want so when flipping through them, you don't get all 10 sub broadcasts of public broadcasting, the shopping channels, foreign language, and channels that just do infomercials most of the time. Makes flipping channels much quicker.

isettech Pretty easy to do, usually. Just takes a bit of time. A person has to be willing to sit down with the remote and actually go through all the channels and make a decision. I’ve done it 2 or 3 times on my TV. I really don’t mind. I enjoy cleaning up the selections. You know, I don’t speak Vietnamese or Tagalog so I block those channels.

Tyler, awesome videos! I just bought a ClearStream 2 Max and installed it in garage attic. I connected it to a 4 way splitter because I had one laying around but really only need a 2 way. With that setup I am only getting a few channels. After watching your videos I am planning on getting the Onn Outdoor amp. I will also get a 2 way splitter instead or would you recommend a distribution amplifier? I'm at 33823 focusing on Tampa TV towers about 35 miles away. Any other tips would be greatly appreciated!

How long is the cord length from the antenna to the splitter? If you check out "Connecting a TV Antenna to Multiple TV sets" in my other videos you'll see exactly what happens when you split the signal without power. If your cord length is less than 20 feet I would just get a distribution amplifier. This is a good model for $26. www.amazon.com/Bi-Directional-Digital-Amplifier-Internet-Booster/dp/B00XEHY64W/ref=sr_1_11_sspa?keywords=distribution+amplifier+4+port&qid=1552334557&s=gateway&sr=8-11-spons&psc=1

A bit of TV history to augment the discussion. Cable TV originally had the promise of commercial free content on many of the channels. It also offered a way for channels to subvert the laws for R-rated content then in place for broadcast TV.

Live in an apt in central TX along IH35 with Austin 50 miles to the north and San Antonio 50 miles to the south and a major antenna tower 30 miles south. Can't even get the 3 network channels with any indoor antenna. Landlord won't allow outdoor antennas. It really sucks especially since I'm paying $53/month to Spectrum Cable for Basic Limited. I'm still on Comcast but I think about going to antenna every time my promo deal is up. I'm sure soon they will piss me off enough that I will only buy the internet. That broadcast tv fee of $8.75 really sucks on top of the regular service fee. I been looking at the Denny's EZ HD. I'm in York PA which is the Harrisburg market. I definitely need all the local channels to come in good. I'm using a TiVo Romiao with lifetime service now so I'd keep that with antenna. What do you think of the EZ HD with a preamp?

The local channels in your market are spaced out. Some broadcast out of Harrisburg and Lancaster so it's not as easy to get them all as you think especially "ABC 27" broadcasting on channel 10 and WGAL on 8. Denny's may do but if you want a better chance try this RCA model. amzn.to/2W0hiOn

To be honest, I didn't think about the idea of megabytes of a tv signal transmission. I only sort of thought of it as that most cable or satellite TV providers had so many channels and they had to cram all if them into a said frequency range for transmission, and that's where the loss in quality was. Where as over the air didn't need compression to do so. But, personally, I don't have a desire to ever really pick up a cable or satellite TV subscription ever, I have been watching SOME of my programming through over the air for basically almost since the change over in 2009, and personally, I like the idea. Not having outages when it rains or snows most of the time, not having to pay a cent to any tv provider, not having to call the provider up when you go to move, not having to call the provider when you don't end up using a box for a while. The last one is especially so when my dad had DirecTV way back when, probably between 2008 an 2012/2014/2015 or so, me my sister's and I of course would watch TV, sometimes on 2 different TV's, and the issue sometimes was is that we wouldn't use the 2nd tv sometimes a week or more consecutively, and often times DirecTV would disable the 2nd tv, my dad eventually called probably around 2014/2015 or so and told DirecTV to cut his service with them. And, for me, that was pretty much ok. I think the reason that my dad did it was mostly because we (being my dad, sister's and I) really didn't really watch TV all that much after about beginning of summer of 2014. Edit 5 or so months later: honestly, I think I heard about the analog to digital transition from my grandfather on my mom's side, and i think I ended up interested in the whole getting a antenna idea for my tv that my grandfather's friend on my dad's side had gotten me while we (my parents, sisters and I) were living with him (that's a story on its own). So, I asked my grandfather's friend to get me a over the air tv antenna (due to me not having a job at the time), and I initially watched over the air side by side while my parents payed for satellite, mostly because there was no cable out where we eventually moved out to.

I grew up without cable and only getting a PBS and CBS. It made me appreciate being on time at night to watch the Charlie Brown Specials. The sad thing though was we did not have a rotor and dad would have to go on the porch roof to turn the antenna while we did the "chain yell" of "ok! stop! Wait! You had it! Go Back"! Sad as my dad cannot hear too well. Anyway, we have come a long way with OTA and it was not until later I found out it was not only one's location, but the antenna and their hook ups. The old days of flat ohm screwing to the VHF screws on back. The days. How I appreciate what is being offered now, but still miss the days of getting far away stations from other cities such as Pittsburgh. I though am somewhat hesitant from switching to directional yagi antennas to multi-directional. Be testing out my Clearstream 2max within the few weeks when I have time. I do not get much time due to my job and can only tinker with the stuff on weekends. Again, another great tv post as you speak Da Bear's language. Thank You, Da Bear
