Well way back in the late 60s and 70s, FM Rock Radio was playing full albums and analysing them like paintings which you'd find in the national gallery. Sadly they only played the horrible Prog Rock snobs like Yes and Emerson, Lake and Palmer, along with the corporate American rock acts like Kansas, Boston, and Styx. While the format I'm talking about is a very irritating, sucky, and pretentious radio format, people loved it, and that's how Zeppelin came to be huge in America

I've been a lifelong Zeppelin fan and not only were these actually interesting, there were some I didn't know. Good job. I remember reading when I was a kid that when Page first heard Plant sing, he wondered if he was some kind of an asshole (he may have said hard to work with) or else why hadn't anyone else snatched him up for lead singer.
@jeb909
4 жыл бұрын
I think Plant being Page's third choice might be a little misleading. From everything I've ever read about it, Page approached Steve Marriott and and Terry Reid before he knew Plant. This video makes it sound as though Page knew about Plant and still preferred someone else. I don't think that's the case. Supposedly, Terry Reid was the person who told Page about Plant and recommended him.
@smith9808
4 жыл бұрын
jeb909 True. Once Page saw Plant he wanted him 100% - same with Bonham after Plants recommendation. It’s crazy to think if Steve said yes, Zeppelin wouldn’t of had either of them.
@stickman1742
3 жыл бұрын
There is a lot of truth to that, but surprisingly a lot of people in rock didn't think much of Plant at the beginning. There is some talk that Zeppelin was certain they wanted Bonham, but weren't quite as sure about Plant. While his singing style became common after their success, at this early time it was considered unusual.

Small Faces lead singer Steve Marriott should be mentioned by name. Very underrated vocalist and a big inspiration to Robert Plant. He (Robert Plant) was actually a Small Faces fan and showed up to many of their gigs, they always thought of him as “that annoying kid” who bothered them. Listening to Zeppelin you can really hear the inspiration Plant took from Steve.

YES! facts about Led Zeppelin (one of the coolest bands of all time)
@johnbenard9550
4 жыл бұрын
On Led Zeppelin getting their name, although legend claims Keith Moon came up with the name, he was possibly repeating what he had heard from his bandmate. John Entwhistle, the bass player with The Who and a budding solo star in his own right, swears that he thought up the name. 'There were several occasions during The Who's career when both Keith Moon and myself were going to leave the band,' Entwhistle claimed. 'Once when we were in New York, I sat down with Keith and our chauffeur at the time, a guy called Richard Cole and tried to come up with possible names for the new band we planned to form. That's when I flashed on Led Zeppelin. I also came up with the idea for a first album jacket with a Zeppelin going down in flames. The reasons behind it are quite simple. In those days it was a favorite line among British rock bands. 'How did you go?' one group asked another, 'Cor, we went down like a lead balloon,' they would reply. Not long afterward, the chauffeur Richard Cole went to work for Jimmy Page and Peter Grant and he must have told them the idea. But I was definitely the one who first thought of it. Later on, Keith Moon claimed that he came up with it, which made me very angry. When I heard that Jimmy Page was going to use it, I was a bit pissed off about it. Later on, I didn't care that much: after all, they became an institution.'
@williamsherman1089

The actual saying is it went over like a lead balloon.
@johnbenard9550
4 жыл бұрын
@@williamsherman1089 Again, it's all he said she said, I've heard it both ways and seen it written both ways. My above post was right out of Led Zep's road manager Richard Cole's book that he wrote about the years he was with Led Zeppelin. Those words are right out of Entwistle's mouth and he was vocal about being the one who came up with the idea. Moon may have said balloon, he was repeating what he had heard from his bandmate John Entwhistle. It was a common saying amongst the British rock bands trying to make it. They would ask each other how their performance went. If they bombed they would answer we went over like a lead balloon. Entwhistle claimed, "There were several occasions during The Who's career when both Keith Moon and myself were going to leave the band." "Once when we were in New York, I sat down with Keith and our chauffeur at the time, a guy called Richard Cole and tried to come up with possible names for the new band we planned to form. That's when I flashed on Led Zeppelin. I also came up with the idea for a first album jacket with a Zeppelin going down in flames." See the Connection Richard Cole was a chauffeur for the whoo for a few years, he later became Led Zeppelin's first road manager. He was there during the meetings with Moon and Entwistle, he was with Zeppelin, he also wrote the book. I have also read a very similar story written in another Led Zep bio book, claiming Entwistle the one who came up with the name. Here is a scan of it with a text converter. Led Zeppelin is a good name, isn't it? I made it up. Everybody says Keith Moon made it up, but he didn't. About four tours ago I was really gettin' fed up with The Who. I was fed up with gettin' no recognition for my writing or my bass playing, and I was really getting depressed. I was talking with a fellow who is the production manager for the Led Zeppelin now. I was talking to him down in a club in New York and I said, "Yeah. I'm thinking of leaving the group and forming my own group. I'm going to call the group Led Zeppelin. And I'm going to have an LP cover with like the Hindenburg going down in flames, and. you know. this whole busi- ness." And like two months later he was working for Jimmy Page and like, they were looking for a name, and so he suggested Led Zeppelin. and Page liked it, and they came out with the same LP cover that I'd planned. I don't know whether the group knows that I made it up. I think they think that Keith made it up because Keith was there, and like Jimmy Page came up to Keith and said. "Thanks for the name." and Keith said, "All right," you know, sort of takin' the credit. I just have to think up a new name for my new group. I'm good at group names . . . surprise myself. John EntwistIe/The Who

@@johnbenard9550 oh I know what your saying I've heard all the Zepp stories over thirty, thirty-five years ago, I was just saying that the old saying that's based on is. And yes your right it is a matter of he said she said lol it's probably more of a case of nobody can actually remember.

I had hoped to learn something new by watching this video & I actually did. I never heard the one where Keith Moon was the one who named the band. Actually he only came up with the concept which lead to the name. As far as Hendrix not liking them because they used older, & usually black, musicians music, I don't know if I buy it. First of all, many of the songs they took liberties with were themselves written & performed by someone else, in some cases multiple times and multiple persons. Back in the days of Ledbelly it was very common to perform other people's music. A few examples off the top of my head: You Shook Me I Can't Quit You Baby You Need Love Bron-Y-Aur Stomp All 4 of these songs were performed by multiple artists but I guess when a group of white dudes make more money from the song than all of the previous artists prior you have to sew for money. If Jimmie didn't like them for doing something many people prior had done then I think it'd have to be because they're white.

How Zeppelin began. Following Beck's departure in October 1966, the Yardbirds, tired from constant touring and recording, began to wind down. Page wanted to form a supergroup with him and Beck on guitars, the Who’s Keith Moon on drums and John Entwistle on bass. Vocalists Steve Winwood and Steve Marriott were also considered for the project. The group never formed, although Page, Beck, and Moon did record a song together in 1966, "Beck’s Bolero", in a session that also included bassist-keyboardist John Paul Jones. This was the beginning of Led Zeppelin

They had him switch it and he hit a couple home runs and a couple line drives off the fence in his first practice game

What a great video BTW. I like the small step away from the Beatles this videos content has today.

Could you do video about Rolling Stones - original member keyboardist Bill Stewart kicked out because he didn't "look right"? Very entertaining channel. 👏👏👏👏

Did Jimmy Page ask Steve Marriott or Ronnie Lane as the video from 1968 shows Ronnie but Steve was the lead singer?

Please do facts on the Beatles solo career albums (i.e. George's Cloud 9), as well as Past Masters, Anthology, Red and Blue Albums, etc. Those would be interesting.
