TEN NO KATA (天の形) - ”Kata of the Heavens”. Kata created along with Taikyoku katas, by Funakoshi Gichin and his son, Yoshitaka. It is important to mention that Funakoshi and Yoshitaka created Chi-no and Jin-no katas as well. However, these two katas were lost after the death of their creators. The three katas represent the unity of heaven (ten), earth (chi), and man (jin). It remains a mystery if their idea was ever completed, or they wanted to expand it further. Ten-no kata is composed of two parts supplementing each other: the first part is executed forward (omote), while the second one is executed by stepping back (ura). It is created to serve as a kumite kata. The first part - omote, is performed individually, and the second one - ura, with a partner. It seems, that Ten-no is the only Shotokan kata that simultaneously presents the question and the answer. The questions are laid out in the first part, where the karateka executes the strikes. The strikes are executed while moving forward. Afterward, in the second part, a series of blocks and counter-strikes ensues. Karateka will first execute gedan-barai, then uchi-uke, shuto-uke, jodan-shuto-barai, age-uke, and jodan-soto-uke at the end. While performing the blocks karateka moves backward. All offense and defense techniques are performed twice, and after each one, the performer returns to the starting position - yoi.
