I think the thing that sums up this video is when Colin asked Shaun "if you could have three things back from the house on the boat, what would you have back?" and Shaun couldn't actually come up with anything. I look around my house and garage at all the clutter and stuff and the concept of simplifying and finding that "sense of what makes you happy just change" that Colin talks of. I guess what it comes down to is actually taking that brave step! For me, in a country with no such canal network the options are a "tiny home" or mobile home such as a camper or converted bus/truck etc... or just downsizing the home and getting rid of stored stuff that is not needed. A fantastic piece of real thought provoking content! Cheers lads!

Here in The U.S.A. We don’t have canals that are all over the country. We do have many rivers and waterways but nothing like the canals in The UK. If we did have those types of canals, I’d sell everything in a nanosecond and invest in a narrow boat. Of course we can always move to the UK. I admire and envy you. Keep the videos coming.

My late husband and I lived on our boat for seven and a half years, being continual cruisers. Only back on the bank because of serious illness. I miss the community, when husband was first diagnosed and taken into St Mary's Hospital at Paddington we were able to Moor in the basin for months. So many boaters offering help, emptying the toilet cassette, disposing of rubbish offering to get shopping and many other things. I would not have been able to stay by the hospital without all their assistance. Plus British Waterways staff, I was so 🙌

I've just stumbled upon this site, and so glad I have. My Wife and I are Australian, 69 and 70. About 15 years ago, we were backpacking/cycling through Bath, along the canal, we were invited to experience a small trip, from lock to lock, by a narrow boat family. They got their teen age children to wheel our bicycles, with our backpacks, everything we owned, clothes, passports and all, to the next lock gate. We were invited into their narrow Boat Home. Goodness me, what we saw utterly Astounded us!. Within seconds upon entering their Boat, their Home, seeing what what we saw, we realised that to describe their Home as Stunning, was completely inadequate! Such beauty, taste, style and elegance!. To this day, August 21, 2021, we have never seen or experienced anything to equal what we saw and experienced that very sunny, very beautiful, and very British afternoon.

When you mentioned storing your stuff at a friend/family members house, it made me think of an old mate of mine. In his early 30's, and entirely out of the blue, he was issued divorce papers, and needed to find somewhere to live. After "sofa surfing" for almost a year (and after the money grabbing ex had finally taken her pound of flesh), he decided he wanted a "Cheap" place to live. Static caravans have a strong "Life didn't go as planned" stigma attached, and just living full time in a touring caravan or camper had just a little too strong a hint of "Pikey" about it for his tastes, so he bought an old but very tidy 40something foot (Can't remember exactly) narrow boat and lived on that. He worked in software development back then, and could work from anywhere with an internet connection, so he was happy enough using his laptop and a GSM modem. It was a bit basic, with a solid fuel fuel stove with a back boiler for heating, cooking, and hot water, 12v electrics (plus a 12v transformer for when it was on a 240v hook up) for light, charging the boats batteries, and running a few mains devices via a 240 inverter. It also had a handful of solar panels, but the bulk of his power still came from an extra alternator and charging system on the boats engine. As I said, it was basic, but it worked, and if anything stopped working it was reasonably simply to work out why and fix it. One day, while he was back in the area, a group of us all met up in a pub, and while chatting he mentioned that he was still paying something like £300 a month for the storage unit he'd rented to put his stuff in when the ex kicked him out. We all chatted about how this was extortionate for a fair while, and eventually 2 pairs of friends in the group said they'd both be happy to store half his stuff each to save him that £3k+ a year. As a thank you for that he offered to take them on a few on boating holidays each a year, and they eagerly agreed. After they'd all been out a few times, he realised that they easily learnt what they were doing with the boat, so could get on perfectly fine without him there. From then on, under the heading of "Giving them some privacy", he'd get the boat all stocked up, then when they got there, they'd just exchange keys. They'd go off on his boat for a week or so, and he'd use their car to get to their home, and live there until they called to arrange where he should meet back up with them with their car. I was chatting to him about this arrangement once, and he said it was amazing. It was like a holiday for him too. He'd take hour long baths every day......... and each time he'd use the toilet, he'd watch the "Waste" flush away with a warm fuzzy feeling that it was all gone for good, and he'd not have to eventually see/smell it again when he needed to humph the toilets "Turd tank" across a marina to empty it. :D He had that boat for something like 10 to 12 years in the end, and only sold it when increasing mobility issues started making it impractical to carry on with the lifestyle. But he does say that if his body hadn't started to turn traitor on him, he'd still be happily living on it.

About four years ago, we completed the project to get rid of about 75% of what we owned, and sold our house to move into an apartment. It was an excellent change for us, great to have less stuff, less to maintain, etc. However, the ease you describe of finding a quiet place to moor really makes me wish we could divest of most of the rest of our stuff, because apartments are not very quiet and I really wish we could move as easily as you.

Fantastic video… professional, funny, informative… what we’ve come to expect. Great camera work too. I’ve lived and traveled long distance on a boat, and I think because you move at a speed that is human, walking speed, you understand the sense of distance more. Everything is more relatable, and you get to understand why you can’t always travel in a straight line, and our ancient, inherent inner sense of being human is satisfied. Car, plane and rail (traiiiiiiiiiiiiin!) journeys cause stress to some degree because they detach you from that. And also, when you arrive somewhere by boat, people are a bit more welcoming, because you’ve made the effort, rather than just one of the hordes who arrive by car or plane? I love our Friday nights; thank you, you two!

I gotta admit, you blokes are crazy good. Totally enjoy your humor, the banter, and still create content that is educational and inspiring. Keep up the good work. With that said, I could really get into something like that and have fun in doing it. Only thing stopping me is over my end of the world we don't have canals.

Well, you tried hard on the negatives, and they really were good reasons, but I believe the positives won out. I think, for me, the deciding factors were the slower pace of life and abililty to gain peace and quiet in the countryside away from the rat race and all it's pressures. Stay well and healthy both of you, you're becoming my therapy and antidote to the insanity and chaos I and many others live within.

Followed your journey from day one, even saw you pass me when Silver fox was launched at St Marys Marina! Stood on the back of my GRP cruiser waving like a soft S***e at Scarisbrick as you went into Liverpool. I always remember thinking "I must look like a tickaloon to them" lol :) Enjoyed every episode so far and not long until I retire and Join you on a narrowboat cruising the cut (where have I heard that before?) keep doing what you do best and that's make a lot of people smile :)

I'm hoping that hydroden fuel cells become a decent and affordable option for my barge engine and heating. Hopefully some day soon! Sadly I just can't power the barge with batteries as it'd just be too expensive (and batteries aren't perfect either) but hydrogen on ships does seem a promising technology; the waste product being water!

Colin & Shaun, I found your channel about a week ago and have become absolutely enthralled with the two of you, your experiences, the history and the narrowboat life. Living in South Africa, there is nothing like that here and you have about 2,000 miles of canals to traverse.. like, wow! Would love to experience that.. just a bit difficult with 5 dogs, 2 bunnies and lamb and a wife who would probably "kidnap" a cow along the way! Seriously, love your channel and thank you for sharing with all of us. Kind regards, Mark
