Right! He seemed like the good guy, but he really wasn’t. And this is what I didn’t like about the book, because it didn’t make sense. Why portray him thru the whole book as being against it all….only to have him turn around in the end and be the same as everyone else? He didn’t love Jasmine, he treated her like a pet and once he had what he wanted, she was disposable.

He seems like an unreliable narrator in a really weird way, like, he makes himself appear more "humane" than he is if that makes sense? You think that "oh he understands that this is wrong and he wants it to change" and then nope, he is just as bad as the rest of them. He just has these thoughts to feel like he has some kind of moral high ground over the others? Im also thrown off because there are these implications made that the virus actually doesnt exist and he seems to have insights on it that the reader doesnt explicitly get told. Like, the virus isnt real? Especially in the lab he implies this

I just finished listening to the audio book for this and holy cow! I think for me the most jarring part was the ending. The sense throughout the novel that while this is dystopian, this is no hunger games in the sense that this story wasn't one of revolution or trying to fix the dystopia. It was just someone surviving in it.

I thought for a long time the book was a huge conversation on eating meat and what it would mean to become a vegan or vegetarian. But after finishing the book I wonder what the objective of the book is with Jasmine and how the book ends. I was fascinated from beginning to end - you should make another video containing spoilers but with what you thought the books underlying meanings are

Omg it’s crazy because at first, I saw marco as like a guy in a hard place and I thought he would slowly idk be better but as I got further I was like ok..he’s actually really a bad person but he sort of comes off in that manner at first so it was hard for me to see him as bad. It solidified more for me when I one realized he was cheating on his wife with his fellow buthcher and then when he got jasmine pregnant I was just grossed out. And then that ending smacks you in the face. He never cared truly. It’s like people who are animal lovers but will still eat animals (I’m not shunning anyone for eating meat btw but that’s just how I saw it).it’s such a interesting book.

I studied veterinary medicine and I've visited slaughter houses more than once so the whole technical part of how slaughtering is carried out was more interesting than weird because it makes so much sense, compared to how it works on animals and really didn't have much an effect on me but the ending... Made me feel sick to my stomach. With both Marco and Cecelia.

I read this yesterday. Marcos' dream sequences have to be my favorite parts of the book. Completely heartbreaking. His internal struggle and sadness was so well-written. I'm looking forward to reading more by Agustina Bazterrica. I NEED to read more of her prose.

The world building is great, in my opinion. I liked how grief was seen through the effects it had on different people. It raised some thought provoking questions but it failed to adequately address some of them. I was disappointed, but not entirely surprised by Marcos for what he did and said at the very end of the book.

I'm honestly not sure if I'll be able to get through it, but I want to pick it up and see. Loved your quick point about the unfairness of published translations! Hi, I'm looking for read this book and I loved your review, thank you for it! I'm Brazilian, and I've read a book this year called "jantar secreto" (secret dinner) written by Rafael Montes It's amazing, because is about how 4 young men are started serving dishes of hum@n flesh for millionaires in Rio de Janeiro, and how the corruption arc of the protagonist is worked when this "business" is growing more and more... It's so realistic and the Best part is it's not a dystopia, it could happen nowdays
@jimclarke1380

Just finished this book. I love a good dystopian tale. Considering this was a translation I thought it still read really well and nothing was lost in translation. I thought the main character was complex and went down a road you don't normally see in dystopian novels. I had to find out what other people thought of it and i'm so glad you reviewed it.

Yes. Its so hard to explain loving a book but being uncomfortable the entire time you're reading (listening in my case). But I also read a lot of crime books, like Karin Slaughter, and those have a similar feel when they discuss the violence and pure graphic detail. But with this book...it's never ending. Every sentence had me crawling in my skin. But at the same time, I really enjoyed it. Made me realize just how numb I've become to these same terms and practices being used for cattle. I'm doing my second listen now because it's been long enough that the ending will still be shocking.

I think this book would be much better if it made me cry and feel nauseous like 'The Heard.' Which is a short film on youtube. I felt like I've read a completely different book to most people because it didn't change my life at all, I guess I'm already vegan? Not sure, there's a lot of sexism and Stockholm syndrome but it could be better. Great video, enjoyed hearing your experience.

It's been awhile since I've read it, but I would say that she was mostly used for effect. I feel like that scene was used to show how to sensitize the characters are to everything. That said, I think there's many moments in the book that illustrate this, so it wasn't really necessary
