@@bombayrasta7814 yes, I would definitely take at least a few weeks off. Rest that hand/arm as much as possible. Ice and compression. Mine has improved loads but I still struggle if I overplay but now I know when to stop and what to do. I frequently ice and use compression on my wrist, forearm and shoulder. I also try to gently stretch daily after a hot shower. Look up doorway stretches & latissimus dorsi stretches. I also make sure I just reach up to the sky frequently to make sure I'm stretching my ribcage out. It all helps release that tension, but as with anything, don't overdo it.

Tremendous stuff, as usual. I've a suggestion, if possible - I use a dictation software at work and this hugely reduces the amount of typing. it doesn't deal with mouse use, but if you type a lot, this is a good way to save that use of hands and wrist. I use Dragon software but there are others.

So lately I've been working out a lot and also practicing 4 to 6 hours a day specifically guitar technique. I was warming up but it seems I have been straining my arms and I got tendonitis. Stop playing the guitar is not an option right now because we have a lot of gigs scheduled for next week and I can't let down my band. Is there a way I can speed up the healing process? I reduced playing hours to one hour a day with breaks also I put ice on my wrist and some ice gel. I dont want to cause a permanent damage.. Help anyone?

There is some great advice here and in the comments but for anyone who is suffering right now, I just wanted to add that years ago I suffered acute tendonitis, mainly in my wrists but also in fingers, which was caused by an injury. I rested and was careful etc., but continued to suffer sudden excruciating shooting/burning pains which put me off playing. So, finally, feeling like a wimp, I went to my doctor and was prescribed some kind of souped-up ibuprofen pills and guess what? They worked. After about a week it was almost completely better.

My solution has come down to learning to play guitar left handed. As soon as I feel I have worked my fretting hand hard enough, I'll switch around and play left handed for a day or 2 to give it a rest. Hopefully I can achieve almost equal technique left handed, I'm about 10 days in and progress is coming along very nicely.

Besides wanting to rip the damn thing out, I was having exactly this thought when mine was at its worst. But looking back now it seems extreme to entirely switch. I tried a lot of remedies on top - nearly 20 essential oils and all the usual rubs, wraps and things like that. Some of the topicals gave some temporary relief but did nothing to address the underlying problem. Until I tried gelatin/collagen...everyone suffering from it should try it. Within the first two weeks most of the pain subsided, and though it was a gradual healing process in the months that followed, the results were unequivocal and consistent. And now today it's completely healed, able to play for hours and having overcome what was a weak spot for years. I wouldn't have been able to do it without it. The stretching on top is important as well... and now I'm trying to find the right balance between the two and in how much is needed. Good luck man, and to everyone else.
@frankthetank136
6 жыл бұрын
LightningStrat Oh yep. Did you just take gelatin as a supplement? Might try it. I kind of gave up learning guitar left hand. I decided to rework my fretting technique and to try to lessen any tension in my vibrato and bending. Working good so far
@LightningStrat
6 жыл бұрын
That's right. I get it from Amazon and it's the Classikool pig skin one if you're in the UK, but I'm sure any would work well. I just mix 15g of it with 2g of ginger powder for the taste in hot water, with a vitamin C rich meal/fruit, 3x a day but more during the healing process. The 15g is important - there was a big study on it about a year ago and they found it doubles the amount of amino acids 1 hour after taking it. And at that point is when it's best to stretch to stimulate collagen synthesis (I didn't stretch until months because mine was quite severe anyway and it only occurred to me later to do so). It's a vast improvement whereas I couldn't see a way forward before. I'm glad you found something that's working so far, and you could always keep some for just-in-case scenarios if you needed - it stores for at least a year. All the best~

Thanks for this video and advice. There is nothing worse for a guitar player than carpal tunnel or tendonitis. Two weeks in and the symptoms keep flaring up. My current career is in music and now its like I need to stop my one true passion and pursue a different course. Its impossible. I'd rather die than give up music. I started singing more, especially after everyone has told me to focus more on that. I thought, what a great excuse to do something I've been so afraid of. But then I noticed I have TMJ as well, and that causes headaches and migraines that are so painful I can't even focus on simple tasks, only after using my jaw for extended periods of time. I contracted lyme earlier this summer and was treated early, but since that moment I've noticed my most used joints are experiencing problems never seen before. It's almost as if the lyme is still inside of me, eating away at the parts of my body that I am always using. I just want to keep playing music. Maybe I should forget about it and move on for now. Or maybe I push my body past its limit until it finds a way to kill me.

Ideally before you get tendonitis, you should work on building up the muscles that you don't use while playing or practicing. It's just as much (or more) your muscles being imbalanced that causes tendonitis, compared to the repetitive motions using [just those muscles that you use for those motions]. Also: I am not a doctor, you should go see your doctor, the stuff I say is not legal or medical advice, yadda yadda yadda.

The worst information I ever heard was to 'play through the pain barrier", because this is a sure fire way to harm yourself, possibly permanently if you persist. When I was younger I did this on one occasion and although I kept playing until the pain went, I thought it seemed weird and unnatural so I never did it again. However by following Claus's advice you can still achieve your playing goals, but at a slower more sensible rate that does not damage your body.

I have tendinitis. I have to play blues in E based on base runs and fills to warm up (& few or no barre chords at first). I have never played scales in my life (been playing 60+ years), so that isn't a problem. Not playing at all for several days helps. But that is hard to do for me. My own songs are pretty much all I practice anymore. Many are now painful for me to play (depressing!).

Great Advice, between streching my fingers, and using a wrist band helps with my practice sessions, lagato's are becoming easy to play, I have a great book of scales and lagoto's, the finger streching allows me to aquire 3 and 4 block spans, then I control my picking and fingerings at a slower rate for precise placement on the fretboard, and I practice every other day for an hour to two hours, even just staring at the lagato's and scales helps in studying for finger placement. .....

Probably best to suggest a visit to a qualified hand therapist and/or doctor. This pain can spiral quickly into long periods of disability. Switching mouse hands could just inflame the other hand because it's not used to doing a mouse. Rest is definitely the best option.

You seem to be pushing my guitar playing in a whole new direction, and with that said I`m trying to establish a brand new form of music. If you could possibly showcase a video of you soloing over both a didjeridoo and Tuvan throat singing (like Kongar-ol-Ondar) (possibly in separate videos) that would be great and I would not for a second doubt your abilities at guitar. Right now I`m looking at pairing up my guitar with the EHX Cock Fight and the EHX Ravish Sitar. If you could watch videos on these pedals and let me know if continuing with your programs would create a beautiful style of music.

I started playing 6 months ago. I had a good start I think, but now I don't know if I going to play again. I have probably tendonitis or carpal tunnel (or both) to both hands. Games and practicing guitar is a bad combination, especially when your posture is not the ideal. Work out people, fix your posture, play less games (if you play at all), drink a lot of water, stretch (there are tons of videos of how to) your hands before and after playing, guitar, don't play in long periods, don't press the strings hard, practice with a stripe etc.

if you get tendonitis.. try drinking gatorade before playing. wait about 15 mins for your blood sugar to go up. hard working tendons need energy and hydration to perform at their best. if you are low and playing a lot your tendons will use up their energy and o2 stores quickly. playing through this causes tendons to break down quicker then they can heal themselves.

+julian lee You get this throbbing, raw pain travelling up your arm in your tendons, and if severe enough can cause any kind of grip or movement to be very painful. To avoid this always warm up slowly, by playing in a relaxed, calm and slow way. You can then build up the tempo slightly after about fifteen minutes. After 30mins you can play as fast as you like, so long as you do not force or push your fingers onto the frets. One of the best videos I ever watched, was a classical guitar instruction video by William Kanengiser, where he explains the technique of pulsing the finger muscles to fret or pluck a note, and then allowing the finger to automatically move away from the fret or string, back to a resting position. This is a very relaxed and efficient way of playing, and would avoid any tension that could lead to tendon problems. This video at around 3:45 mins shows this in action www.zhuatieba.com/video/XNDg5MzM5MTQ0
