What you said about palindromes reminded me of a little Swedish comic I used to read as a kid. It was about these two brothers and an adventure they go on. The story isn't too interesting but what was really cool is that you would read through the comic and when you got to the end of the booklet, you were only halfway through the story. You then had to turn the booklet upsidedown and read back to the beginning. What I loved was all the cartoons made sense when normal and turned upside down. What was even cooler was that when you turned to booklet upside down the meaning of the images changed and you got a completely different image and story from the cartoons even though the only difference was their orientation.

Asked my mormor who still has it and it was a Swedish translation of a early 1900s comic by Dutch cartoonist Gustave Verbeek. It's called "The Upsidedowns of Little Lady Lovekins and Old Man Muffaroo". I misremembered it as two brothers, though the last time I read it was over 8 years ago.

Someone pointed out that the whiteboard behind the characters during the ‘catching the bullet’ scene implies that time travel is being based off of the theory of entropy. So basically instead of cause = effect, the effect = the cause. Which in turn results in its effect to begin with (In other words ‘Inversion’). I agree that most likely the structure of the storyline will be indeed a palindrome. This supports that theory the most. Also, imagine the plane crash scene being the least interesting thing about the whole trailer - his MIND 😳😱

This talk about the title got me thinking, especially as Nolan’s film titles often have levels and secret meanings to them that are central to their film’s themes (Inception, The Prestige, The Dark Knight, Memento). So I did some digging down the rabbit hole... TENET isn’t just a palindrome. Stylized like it is on the title card it’s also an ambigram: when read upside down it’s identical as it has 180° rotational symmetry. That’s to say if it’s INVERTED 180°it’s identical. As Washington corrects Patinson in the trailer: "time travel?" "No, INVERSION" This is obviously very similar to the word INCEPTION, Nolan’s definition of which played such a crucial role in that movie. The promotional thumbnails and posters for the film play on this idea of rotational symmetry or inversion. I anticipate Washington, like Cobb in Inception, uses his skills of Inversion to his advantage. Almost every shot in each trailer plays on this notion of inverting time. When you read an ambigram like TENET thats been inverted you are essentially reading it backwards, despite it looking the same, and that seems to be the way events, objects and time are reversed in the trailers. Rather, or perhaps as well as a palindromic plot; proceeding to the middle of the film and then mirroring that for the second half, we might see after the inversion occurs the same identical incidents seen from an inverted point of view, with a literal and figurative change of perspective for Washington, as his world is turned upside down. Using a major plot twist would is not uncommon for Nolan, but this would be on another level, and play a central role in the film. In the trailer we see TENET used as a sort of codeword, so I researched it and it's links to palindromes a bit. The Sator square is the most ancient 2D palindrome in the world, and features the latin word TENET in its centre in all caps: S A T O R A R E P O T E N E T O P E R A R O T A S Found in the ruins of Pompeii, it has a host of religious and magical significances. In Latin Tenet translates as “(he) holds”. In English its definition is “any opinion, principle, doctrine, dogma, etc., especially one held as true by members of a profession, group, or movement.” We could assume the “doors” the codeword will open may belong to such a group. As wiki states; The Sator square was often placed above doorways and inscribed on various objects for protection from evil happenings. In this way the sator square is a literal tenet in the English sense, as it was believed to protect the group who constructed it, as well as featuring the very word itself, and the figurative language of doors is played upon in the trailer. Very neat. I would not be surprised to find any of the words from the Sator square, or the Christian version “Paternoster” cropping up as characters or locations in the film. One translation of the Sator square is “The sower works for mastery by turning the wheel”, which may allude to Washington working for others by inverting, with numerous examples of wheels turning in the trailer, be they car steering wheels or wind turbines. With Michael Caine’s fabulous reading of the poem Do not go gentle into that good night in Interstellar in mind, I’m going to stick my neck out and say that The Second Coming by Yeats might feature in Tenet, as it seems to fit the what we know of TENET and its themes. I find it a bit pointless to speculate specifically on the film’s plot; these aspects may come up or not but I think they’re interesting themes and layers anyway. Yes, I did get a bit carried away on this. It’ll be fun to see if any of these ideas make it into the final cut of the film.
@josephshmoe1647

So far you're the only other person I've seen in any comments who made the connection to the SATOR Square. I think catching the bullet was a huge plot indication in the trailer, because he takes an event and he undoes it. If someone beats a Yeats poem to death for dramatic purpose like they did with Dylan Thomas, I'll fucking lose it though.

The Prologue and film is a homage to The 39 Steps. Your predictions are making me more excited for this movie! As far as the palindrome as a framework, it reminds me of The Last Five Years, where one character’s perspective starts at the end and works back, and the other starts at the beginning and works forward, meeting in the middle. Obviously not quite the same, but the idea of a past and future self working towards the same climax in opposite directions is reminiscent.

Something I've noticed about Christopher Nolan's films is that regardless of anyone's expectations based on trailers or picking up on any themes Nolan uses, Nolan manages to make an all around entertaining film, even if you decide not to bother to dive into the cerebral thing he does in each movie. I loved Inception long before I was intelligent enough to understand it. Interstellar and Dunkirk makes you think and for some reason it makes the movie better, and I can't wait for Tenet.

There’s a theory involving maxwells equation. Both of them JDW and RP are on different sides of the wall which are colored red and blue representing the molecules divided in Maxwell’s demon. It explains how the universe works basically. When that barrier is broke for example when JDW future self shoots the bullet hole; there’s a breakage in time this allowing it to reverse. We see in multiple trailers the blue and red room that Kenneth Branagh, JDW, and RP were in in pictures or clips that signify Maxwell’s diagram. The movie will most likely end at the prologue where JDW was the man who reversed the bullet in order to save his past self from completing the mission and saving the civilians.

Memento isn't entirely shown backwards; the black and white sequences are presented to the audience in chronological order and the colour sequences in reverse order. I love this theory! I think the palindrome title is definitely something worth considering but my other complete speculative idea was that time was consistently working both forwards and backwards and the characters are trying to intercept time at a middle to reverse disasters, seemingly world war three from the trailer. In terms of plot I thought this might be thrown off course at some point (maybe of the death of the main character?) and time becomes fragmented within the film to not follow his rule of time working both forwards and backwards ?? I’m probably a million miles off but I’m far too excited about all this - great video!

Isn't that like one of the writing no-gos: to have your main character end at the same place where they began the story? so maybe the circumstances and events will mirror themselves, but not the character. but than again, what is more important then the character? If their experience is the palindrome it is probably even harder to do than just events.

I think you're spot on with seeing events in one direction of time, then later the same event in another direction. Palindrome shaped story structure could totally work, so long as information is what differentiates the beginning vs the end. Likely he will do some cheating by just seeing different events beginning and end, while the same action is happening. Maybe some cool surprises with people speaking backwards, and you only hear them after?

I like your analysis of the trailers and the idea of the start and the end of the film being mirror images of each other does sound very possible. I just hope that the very middle part of the film incorporates this, like having two characters talking to each other and then once the mid point passes, the characters swap sides of the screen, marking the start of the reflection. I do hope that there is only one form of time travel in this film, since Lost and it's two different forms of time travel... [rambling mess of text redacted]... I just hope it's one form of time travel but used in a different way instead of inventing a new way for a singular purpose. A great piece of time-travel based story telling is a podcast called Ars Paradoxica, where time travel is real but you can only travel backwards towards a specific date during WWII, cue american army using it for it's own devices to create a "better" world. I highly recommend it for those who are really into time travel. It's use of static over recordings to show that the timeline is being changed is *chefs kiss* and throughout it, the tech used to travel back in time never really changes, it also has the consequences which can be really interesting because why the fuck would you think that time travel would be safe e.g. the film Primer is a good example.

What if the climax is just the midpoint, like the film ends and its clear that everything that just happened is going to reverse. Our main characters will be happy that yay they've saved the day only for the realisation that due to the "palindrome effect" they've basically done nothing and its sort of a downer kick in the teeth ending but with hints of relief as maybe a friend will die in the middle so at least that person will be saved now.

Ok so an idea of how it could work is like how the anime Steins gate works, if you looks at time travel as each time you travel you are creating a new parallel universe where that change happens, then the first half will be him doing things and making changes up untill he realises the first original world was the best outcome, so now has to reverse the changes that were made to return to that world, reversing the event that took place

If the timelines/past-selves part does end up being a part of the movie, I just hope it doesn't steal too much from Looper or Arrival. Arrival especially. That movie was crafted around the premise that the future and the past are the same for Amy Adams's character, even if the sci-fi medium for showing that theme was aliens, versus the technology medium Nolan usually goes for. I know Nolan always has his own spin to put on things, but I also don't want other good movies to get swept under the rug just because it's NOLAN doing it, when they've already done it, and done it well.

The palindrome thing would seem likely if it didn't seem totally impossible to make a palindromic movie! But if it is then I really think you could be onto something with the two versions of the main character. Especially seeing as the inversion effect seems to be brought on using gas masks, so stuff that's presumably later on in the movie when John David Washington and other characters are wearing full face masks probably means they spend a long period reversing the flow of time. Maybe half a movie!

As this was the first big film to be filmed here, everybody knows someone who was an extra and so on, so we've experienced a weird sort of hype-excitement around the film since it was shot last spring, and it has nothing to do with Nolan or that the movie will be any good. And now I find out it's bound to be an absolute masterpiece, and a very significant scene used to promote the film is in that one channel in a completely random Tallinn neighbourhood? Feels weird, man. :D

I don't know much about film at all, but the idea that a film could be formatted like a palindrome? fuck, that's exciting.

I literally have no clue what on earth this movie is about, but I think you at least were able to nab a small piece of it. I really can't wrap my brain around it, but maybe that's the point and I won't be able to get it until I'm sitting down and watching the movie proper, and I'm glad that that's the case because I would hate to walk into this movie knowing exactly what's going to happen lol

That’s a really good theory but they also released a poster & it’s John David Washing older & in reflection he is younger. But maybe that theory still applies

I doubt that John David Washington will kill himself in the movie at all, but the rest of this analysis sounds spot on. Can't wait to see if somehow Nolan has found a way to do that.

if i recall correctly pattinson said in his GQ feature that theres no time travel in the film, so idk what that implies btw the photos rob pat took of himself for that feature are WILD

I would kinda like Nolan to do something simple, like just a simple love story.
