Tengku's Bold Move: Declaration of Independence 1956
On 8th February 1956, Malaya heard via television and radio a day that would change the destiny of it's people.
In a speech made from London, Tunku Abdul Rahman, the First Minister of Malaya and Prime Minister Designate for the Federation of Malaya announced the signing of the document for the Independence of Malaya on 8th February 1956, approximately 8 months prior to real independence on 31st August 1957.
The Tunku's efforts in negotiating with the British Colonial office in London, Buckingham Palace, The House of Lords and political and administrative elements in British Government paved the way for merdeka, or freedom.
