Video log of a quick morning trip to Casey Springs in Winneshiek County on Saturday, July 6, 2024.
The target species in Casey Springs are wild brown and brook trout.
The Iowa DNR conducted plantings of fingerling "put and grow" South Pine strain native brook trout in 2003 and 2004. No plantings have occurred since. Two years ago the state completed a substantial erosion control and stream bank modification effort, radically changing the character of the lower half of the public access portion of the creek.
It remains unknown as to whether sufficient brook trout survived the creek modifications to sustain the fishery.
