Hi guys! It would be great to hear you talk about how to hit a 1h backhand on the stretch/on the run. I find its a great shot when you have time to set yourself up, but when playing aginst a tough opponent who makes me move and doesn't give me easy shots, hitting a 1h backhand under pressure, i.e. any circumstance where you don't have a comfortable amount of time to prepare the shot, is something I find really difficult. Certainly when compared with the 2h which feels like a more forgiving shot. Any thoughts on this would be much appreciated!

Agree with the comment. I injured my left wrist (am right handed) and was forced to switch to OHB and it is hard as hell to hit streched and on the run, since it's almost impossible to hit an open stance OHB like you can with a DHB. The only two guys that I see doing it on tour are Thiem and Shapo, and they don't do it often.

Top Tennis Training - Pro Tennis Lessons how about a lesson on when to come to the net, or when to stay back, after you hit a shot when you’re out of position. That split second indecision costs points and gets me stuck in no mans land. That would be interesting video. How do you hit that awkward in between shot in no mans land? And how do you decide after making that shot to come into net or get back to a neutral position? You hit a shot in an awkward spot where if you make the wrong move you’re opponent could take over the point and hit a winner.

Enjoyed watching this backhand video. I have used the backhand setup described by Alex for years. However, I am now 73 years old and my reflexes have slowed with age and I found it difficult to execute the backhand stroke when the ball was hit at me with pace. Slice is no problem. Ironically I now use Alex's original backhand because it allows me a little more time to execute. The trade off as you stated is in the power, but in my age group it is still effective. I always watch any new video you guys put out for ways to improve. Keep them coming.

Is lever correct term ? Every coach is using "leverage" term for the speed of racket head. Lever is there, but we move the lever very fast, do not change the distances to the fulcrum, if we talk the usual lever in tennis physics. It should be angular velocity, I guess. Higher the radius, more velocity when we think the center of the circle is our shoulder. Simon is the best teacher beyond coach, as he is adding rational way to to teaching. Thx Simon ! And Alex, the talent.

Hi coaches, first thanks for your advice which always makes a lot of sense and is conveyed in a very enjoyable, watchable and educational fashion. I've noticed that you are open to suggestions about your future videos, so it occurred to me that I'd love to hear and see more about a proper way of "finding" the correct/best place of the ball where to hit it. It seems to me that this is a BIG problem. Tennis or rather the tennis ball is pretty fast, it can also be floating, bending, spinning, skidding ... also the racquet generates high speeds ... on top of that I as a player am running or sliding. There is very little time to decide. Timing is crucial. When playing a game of tennis, it is not ball feeding, it is not static at all. And it is frustrating/devastating when I keep mishitting the ball or find myself frequently jammed. I know that everything is about practice, experience, hours and hours of playing but is there anything I could use to get better, to visualise the spot, the correct spot that is ideal, that exists only in one place and time in the future so to speak? Thanks a bunch 🙂.

@@TopTennisTrainingOfficial Hi again, I found this video of yours where you cover the problem: kzitem.info/news/bejne/s42evnaocn6ArYo, however I am more interested in some insights into the position of the ball to the right of my body (I am a righty and the forehand pose the biggest problem). Of course I can hold the racquet in front of me and sort of calculate the distance but still I find it difficult. It would be wonderful if you tried to explain it and incorporate the angles from which the ball comes from the opponent's side, the proper position of my body (to be leaned, tilted into the ball etc.). The anticipation/visualisation of the ball trajectory in relation to my body and the perfect spot to hit the ball causes me the trouble. Thanks for thinking about it and the vidoes.

Can you guys talk about if you should work on one thing at a time and try get to a certain point before working on something else or whether you should try balancing out working at multiple things?

@TopTennisTrainingOfficial

The American twist is a kick serve with extra bite off the bounce, you have to focus on brushing across the ball more aggressively. Check out this video - kzitem.info/news/bejne/2qCmz2SZhqScrKw

Really loved the actual pre-positioning to get ready in a shorter time. Pity I need someone to help me to get the position well marked in my "automated" movements. Any wall drill to do this on my own? (I will omit I have a different grip all along lol)

Hi Guys! Great video and single handed backhand lesson by the way. What I'd like to understand is this: How should the fingers positioned while holding the eastern backhand grip? I mean should they look as if you were accelerating a motor bike or should they be at some angle? Can you guys address this in a video?

Loved the lesson; hope to try it out later today. I have watched your Kick Serve video, but as I have aged, the Kick I used to get is gone; not sure if I have lost more on racquet head speed or a change in my technique.

Alex's back hand is just like Federder's waiter tray back hand. It doesnt look very nice or generate alot of topspin/ power but it fits his game's style which take on the ball early and use the oponent's force.

Great advice. I had the same issue with a backswing that was too low. I tried to fix it by lifting the left elbow as advised here (I'm right handed) but I found the strain on my left wrist extremely painful (it would put it in an awkward bend creating tons of tension). I then tried a different approach by forgetting about the left elbow and instead focused on pulling upwards and bit outwards on the racket handle with my right hand to give me that extra height that was lacking on my take back. It felt natural biomechanically (for me at least) and I gained height and space (away from my body). I thought I would drop my 2 cents in case it could help others. The one-handed backhand is just so much fun. Alex's is picture perfect but I heard Simon's is not too shabby either (the real question remaining: can the ambidextrous Simon hit a left-handed one-handed backhand?????).

Hi Alex and Simon! Thanks for the video. Does not dropping the front shoulder leads to loss of balance? I play two handed and I like to keep the shoulders level. please shed some light on this. Thanks
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial
4 жыл бұрын
Two-handed backhand vs one-handed is slightly different. For the two hands it's better to stay upright and get under the ball with the legs and racket drop. Remember we have the top hand to help generate topspin on the two-hander, on the one-hander you need to use any tool you can to get extra topspin. As soon as balls come chest high or higher I have big troubles with the one handed bh, especially on clay. What do you advise? Going back to hit the ball at a lower level or stepping in? Or try to hit the high ball with adjusted grip? Or doing a slice? Thanks

@TopTennisTraining Alex, what racket are you using? And great Video!!
@dennismalkowski4132

In one of your earlier one-handed backhand videos Alex mentioned that he drops his front shoulder when taking the racket back. In that video it looks like he was still using his old style backhand where he started low and then brought the racket up into the power position like he's doing at the beginning of this video. With his new technique that is more in line with what the top pros are doing - ie, starting with the racket higher initially and just turning the shoulders, should you still drop the front shoulder or keep the shoulders level? While experimenting with this I found that if I keep the shoulders level during the shoulder turn I get more consistency and power. Any thoughts?

Very instructive guys, but not a small amount of modesty to make it. Seen Alex's backhand live and with Roger. He already has much more of his back into it than here and his head stays on the contact point far longer than here enabling him to drive it in full balance. Head to head on backhands I think he can stand with Dimitrov, Thiem and Stan - and has already done so with Roger. I would buy Alex's real one -handed backhand from Simon for $1,000 any day of the week - fun stuff, keep it up.

The trouble I have with my 1H BH is that I tend to fall backwards even if I think I am transferring my weight forwards. Do you have a suggestion how I can work on this?
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial
4 жыл бұрын
Start getting used to stepping with heel and transferring to toe, (finishing firmly on front foot), use hip rotation forward. In terms of drill can hit and lift back foot (like balet) or even hit the shot and make a step forward every time to get used to going into it

Higher take back makes it easier to make contact higher in an aggressive way. A low takeback would produce a low to high swing which produces topspin and that’s not necessarily the best option on higher balls
