Hi SImon - Congrat's on 200k subscribers - well deserved. I have a similar routine that I always do holding a racquet and then a shadow swing. My thought was, in a match situation there's no point getting to the ball and then not having the stroke ready. I always find these videos very helpful because like a lot of club players, I only get limited time to hit during the week so I focus on off-court fitness.

Please can you make a video about periodisation in tennis? I've been trying to create a program for myself so I can improve over the summer (I don't have access to a coach right now) and I'm not sure exactly how to go about it.

Excellent composite, thanks. Do you have any suggestions for grip strength and/or isometrics?
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial
4 жыл бұрын
For grip strength, a good device is a hand gripper or a powerball. I've used both and they work well in developing the finger strength. I use the hand gripper for my martial arts training and have noticed a difference in my grip strength. We have many isometric exercises inside our fitness course on the website, but some of the best for tennis players would be the plank, the wall sit, the bridge, press up position hold and a holding lunge. All the best Simon

I did it for a while, personally I didn't see much of a difference with my power or stability, except on the volleys. So I've used it for a good few years now on the volleys, in one of our volley lessons you'll see me doing it. For serve and groundstrokes, I found that shadow swings with a racket cover on does much more. All the best Simon

Awesome routine! Due to my age and some joint issues, I have to be careful about doing plyometrics, and I have to be careful when I do lunges, so I can't do some of these exactly as demonstrated but I can adapt a lot of them which I have done. I used to do the pushup position core exercise that Simon demonstrated, but I've been a slacker and have not done them for a while, going to put them back in my routine starting today! What I have been doing almost daily the past few months is shadow swinging all of my strokes, a bunch of rotator cuff exercises including what is in this video, rotational exercises with a weighted ball, lateral movements with a resistance band around my ankles, chest expanders with a band, goblet squats or step ups to a bench, back and groin stretching and strengthening, several grip exercises including weighted racquet swinging and finger band extensor exercises (I always do those but I also have about a dozen different forearm and grip goto exercises, and do a couple each workout ... farmers walks, hand grippers various degrees of resistance, forearm rollups, hammer rotations, wrist curls as Simon demo'd, etc.). Sadly, on the tennis court, I can still run faster and get to more balls than a lot of players 20 years younger than me ... that should NOT be a reality lol.

I need to buy a resistance band, there're so many in the market, I want to get one like yours, could you give me some suggestions ? thanks for your help.
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial
2 жыл бұрын
Hi, I would suggest buying a pack of different bands with various colours, or the ability to attach and detach the various colours. I have one that starts with very low resistance on the light colours and goes up to black which is extremely high resistance and actually just like lifting heavy weights in the gym. If you see one with clips and various colours, that would be the best. I got mine on Amazon for $20 or so. All the best Simon

Thanks! If we play 2-3 matches a week, would you suggest doing these workouts on all our off days? Should I be doing any distance running (sometimes I feel like running 3-4 miles on my off day negatively effects my game).
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial
4 жыл бұрын
I'd suggest doing it 2-3 times per week, on your days off matches but you also want to include a day off totally from training to let the body rest and recover. Longer runs can help your stamina, once a week is good enough, normally before your day off. All the best Simon
@TennisHacker
4 жыл бұрын
There's no perfect answer to this, it really depends on you capacity to recover. Generally matches and this style of training (which is great) will tax your system. So depending how your body responds, you might need to reduce the volume and focus more restorative stuff like mobility and stretching. At the end of the day the biggest way to slow progress is to get injured.
