Terang Bulan is an Indoneisan folk song adapted from popular French melody “La Rosalle”. There are many versions of Terang Bulan, there all share very similar lyrics as below:
Terang bulan,
Terang bulan, di pinggir kali.
Buaya timbul, disangka telah mati.
Jangan percaya, mulutnya lelaki.
Berani sumpah, tapi takut mati.
However, the lyrics for Terang Bulan by Miss Ninja and Victor Tobing are different from the popular lyrics above. The lyrics are not popular, to the best of my knowledge, the lyrics only used in this version of Terang Bulan. Terang Bulan by Miss Ninja and Victor Tobing released in late 1930s. The song was recorded from a 78 rpm vinyl, I obtained the audio file from Internet Archive. The label reads ”Terang Boelan, Ternyaji oleh Miss Ninja dan Victor Tobing, Hawaiian orkest, “Sweet Java Islanders”, CEI. 8042, DB. 30192, Columbia Graphophone Co., Ltd.”. I could not find lyrics for this song online, the lyrics below are what I hear, it may not be accurate.
Ninja, mengapakah engkau kelihatan lesu dan sedih?
Oh, rupa-rupa fikiran menggoda hatiku, kalau saya memandang pada bulan yang cemerlang itu.
Terang bulan dan bintang pun bercahaya
Duduk termenung memikirkan cinta
Mikirkan tuan yang jauh di mata
Sampai hati meninggalkan saya
Oh Ninja, di dalam hatiku pun begitu juga.
Terang bulan
Teranglah di kali
Sambil duduk, hatiku menangis
Rasa hidupku malang sekali
Hatiku pilu sebagai kediri
The tune for Terang Bulan was adopted from a French melody entitled “La Rosalie” composed by French poet and songwriter Pierre-Jean de Béranger (1780-1857). Many songs in different languages adopted the tune of “La Rosalie”, including national anthem of Malaysia “Negaraku”.
National anthem of Malaysia “Negaraku” set to the tune of Perak state Anthem, Allah Lanjutkan Usia Sultan, which adopted the tune of “La Rosalie”. According to Tuan Haji Mustapha Albakri, the tune was used as the Perak state anthem for the first time in England in 1902 during the installation of King Edward VII.
In 1902, Sultan of Perak, Sultan Idris Murshidul’adzam Shah (reign 1887-1916), represented the Malay Rulers of the Federated Malay States at the installation ceremony of King Edward VII. When ship carrying Sultan of Perak arrived at Southampton Port, a protocol officer from the Colonial Office boarded the ship to ask about the Perak State anthem. It was a practice in those days, to play the state or national anthem of the visiting head of state or king on his arrival in England.
Perak did not have a state anthem at that time. It so happened that private secretary to the Sultan, Raja Harun bin Sultan Abdullah, was a musician. Raja Harun refused to admit Perak did not have a state anthem. He told the protocol officer that Perak had its state anthem, but the music sheets were not brought along. He said that he could play the song without looking at the sheet. Raja Harun played the tune of “La Rosalie”. Since then, the tune was adopted as the Perak state anthem.
Another version is that Sultan Abdullah’s (1842-1922, reign 1874-1877) daughters heard the popular tune, La Rosalie in Mahé, Seychelles. They played it for their brother, Raja Chulan, who often visited, and he learned to play it on the violin. He introduced it to his brother, Raja Ngah Mansur. A British official required the national anthem of Perak for the ceremonies when Mansur visited England for the Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria in 1888. Mansur told the official that he hadn’t brought the sheet music of the song. He whistled the tune, and a musician transcribed the notes.
In 1928, there is a recording of “Terang Boelan” by the Krontjong Orchest Eurasia. This is the oldest known recording of "Terang Boelan".
For English version, it was recorded as “Mamula Moon” by Geraldo and His Orchestra in the 1930s, and by Felix Mendelssohn and His Hawaiian Serenades in the lates 1940s.
Dutch version of “Terang Boelan” was sung by Zangeres Zonder Naam.
During the Second World War, the tune also adopted to a Japanese song in a Japanese propaganda film, Marai no Tora (The Tiger of Malaya).
In 1956, A Cantonese version entitled 月光曲 (Moonlight Melody) was recorded, with lyrics by Zhou Cong (周聪) and sung by Liang Jing (梁静). In 1961, a Mandarin version entitled 南海月夜(Moonlit Night of the Sounthern Sea)was released by Yao Li (姚莉).
