This is one of the most powerful and underrated scenes in the entire show. When you actually realize what you're seeing here, what's going on in this scene... It's deep. Hint: There is absolutely no logical, computational reason for a machine whose job is to protect John Connor, to be dancing ballet by herself, alone in her own room. It serves zero tactical purpose. It is only a frivolous waste of power cell energy. The implication is therefore that she is doing it because she _wants_ to. Because she _likes it_. The implications of that are enormous. Especially in light of Sarah's preceding monologue. It amazes me that it seems to sail over a lot of people's heads.
@jasonchurilla5176

I whole-heartedly agree, and that's why it's one of my favorite scenes in the entire show. And it's made even better by Derek being the one to see her dancing: John probably would have been impressed, and Sarah probably would have thought it strange. But Derek has seen first hand the destruction that Skynet and the Terminators have wrought, living in a shattered world, and always seeing them as instruments of destruction (ans thus always giving Cameron short shrift). So for him to see her doing something beautiful and creative disturbs him on a primal level, and he doesn't know what to think. And you can see that on his face at the end there. To coin a phrase, he finds it 'horrifyingly beautiful'.

That is because Cameron was a lot more than a reprogrammed Terminator. There are clues throughout both seasons that she was becoming self aware.
@Bloodgod40

All terminators, at least from the T-800 series forward, have a tendency to become fully self aware if they spend an extended period of time around humans with their brain switched to read-write. The Arnold terminator in T2 was on the borders of developing emotions after hanging around with the Connors for only a few days.

Bloodgod40 That's why Skynet was keeping their CPUs on Read Only. But Cameron was far ahead of the others because she was built and programmed to mimic human emotions. That is why she was glitching in season 2, because her emotions and self awareness were conflicting with her source code.

I always loved that. Derek is a man whose whole life has been absolutely destroyed by war. But when he sees beauty in front of him, it moves him to tears. In a way that he quite doesn't understand and neither does this machine quite understand either. Like, if you built a machine to understand ballet it would be nothing but mechanical. But a machine discovering how to perform ballet - that's beauty.

While Derek is watching Cameron - who is a Terminator - dancing Ballet, he is stunned by the beautiful way, in which she - the ostensibly lifeless machine - performs her movements in concert to the background music; an expression of beauty only humans are supposed to be capable of. And Derek realizes this cruel extinction bearing fact with disturbance and horror emanating from his eyes. He can't shoot this; he can't fight this; he can't undo this or push this back to where this art and beauty creating behavior - that threatens the existence of mankind more than any physical weapon ever could - might have originated from. He, the tough soldier from the future, can't do anything other than just standing there... ... helplessly witnessing the beginning of the end of mankind.

I saw this before I started ballet classes, and it had stuck with me as very poignant. Watching it again now with a better understanding of ballet, this scene suddenly means slightly more to me within the context of the story. Ballet is technical and precise, however this dance is very natural, probably more ballet-inspired than anything. She's a cyborg, a machine, her developpes should be perfectly 180degrees, her feet should be perfectly turned out, but they aren't.

She's machine, but she's feeling this music and the dancing without paying attention to that inhuman perfection that she can easily achieve, and humans strive really hard for often forgetting in the process how to create and feel the music. This is just how I see it now, because now the dance looks a whole lot less complicated to me than it did before I danced, I'm mentally breaking it down into choreography to learn rather than feeling it like I did before. It's still a beautiful scene.

One of the most memorable and beautiful. In addition to this scene, I also got stuck in my head: I love you and I love me. Also the scene where Cameron gives John a locket with a detonator so he can kill her in case she becomes a threat to him again. I love the look in Cameron's eyes at that moment. She puts her life in his hands. I show that I believe him, but John still doubted. The best moment is when you can see in her eyes how much she hates what she is. How annoyed she is by the fact that deep down she wants to kill him. He tries even harder to be safe. I am convinced that Cameron really loved John.
