Great Comparison ... I agree with you ... I love the "blank canvas" rather than a paint by number. Too bad you didn't have Terraforming Mars Dice Game! And as an undefeated champion ... do you use the expansions? Prelude? Turmoil? What are you typical / best scores? And Sean's overview was interesting too ... he explained it well. And I can see that you don't have our House Rule (ie, "play nice")

When the dice game comes up, we’ll definitely revisit the question! It’s even less strategic though, so we waffled on pledging the KS and missed out. We just use prelude regularly. My general experience is that expansions don’t often improve a game when you absolutely already love it (Tuscany to Viticulture is a solid exception to that). We actually don’t have a lot of time to get TM to the table, because of the sheer volume of games we have. So we haven’t been terribly motivated to buy expansions that charge game play. We do have Elysium though and have played the alternative map.😊 With the playing nice - it’s not as bad as I make it sound. For instance, if we play cards where we get to remove plants from an opponent, or lower their production, we generally don’t. It always feels mean. We don’t like any Take That element to our games. So generally we do our own thing in games and just see who scored most at the end; which is why I’m a heavy euro fan!

@@inspired2game Ahhhh .... yes .... you brought back memories ... I actually removed a couple cards from Terraforming Mars because their whole purpose was being "mean" ... and I house ruled the ones that had negative effects for an opponent to waive that negative effects. And I always played with Prelude ... and over half of the time with Turmoil. Bought but never played the Venus Next expansion. Bought Colonies and only played it once. Neither of those were worth it - I agree with your assessment that if you LOVE a game the expansions are not needed! Do you track your scores in an app? I use Board Game Stats (the paid version - I like paying the extra to support apps that are really good). My high score with Terraforming Mars Prelude was 138 playing Valley Trust. My worst was 49 with Manutech.

We use that app too. It’s fantastic. We only started tracking with it two years ago (and have been playing modern board games for 20+ years), but since we started tracking 152 with prelude looks to be my highest (most of my scores are between 130-145). But again, we weren’t keeping track prior 2 years ago, so I’m not sure about before that - as we’ve had TM for roughly 5 years.

@@inspired2game whoa ... I've played 37 games with Prelude and rarely (really rarely) beat your lowest scores (another 30 games with Turmoil which DID bump up my scores a little). I think you would trounce me! But, fortunately, I play to enjoy playing and can have just as much fun (almost) even when losing!

I've spent so much time trying to decide which one to get, and I still don't know. I LOVE playing TM on my tablet and that's the one I really want (with Prelude of course.) However, the game length is a deal-breaker because my wife and I don't have space to leave a game out and come back to it. If we did, I'd be all over it. I could get Ares instead but I think I'd spend the whole time telling myself I could be playing TM instead!

That’s a tough choice! But you know, they’re both completely different games really (as far as game play goes), if TM is what you love, I think TM sounds like the answer. The play time difference isn’t actually that great between the two; TMAE can actually go just as long. How much time do you both have to play? We can play TM within 2 hours, but sometimes it takes closer to 3. We’ll usually pull it out on a Saturday or Sunday where we can put aside the afternoon for playing. The length of time means it doesn’t make it to the table as often as I’d like, but it’s always worth it for when it does! 😁 Good luck with your choices! With all our games, TM is still in my top ten favorites! Thanks for watching Simon!

@@inspired2game Thanks for replying. I'd say 2.5 hours is our max time because we don't have somewhere to leave the game set up to come back to later. I am considering TM base plus Prelude and using the World Govt rule from Venus that lets the first player raise oxygen, temp, or place an ocean tile at the start of each new generation without receiving the benefit. What are your thoughts? Would this work in game and reduce the length a bit?

I think that would help the time for sure! Also, it can be played with expediency in mind, by focusing energies more on pushing up parameters than engine building. 😊

I decided not to get Ares Expedition because I found it silly that it is supposed to be a card game version of TM but it still has vestiges of the main board that most agree adds very little to nothing. Also the Action Selection for a 2 player game is imo boring because if you deduce right, you get max, 2 actions. With more players that Action Selection becomes more fun (or it can slow down the game due to AP). I've played Race for the Galaxy and that game gave me a severe case of AP but I think the decision is easier in Ares. The Reason I would choose TM over Ares is the main board. We play with drafting and that alone changed my friend's mind about the game. On our first game we, tried it RAW and my friend got stuck with a bunch of beginning cards he could not play with and he had to keep passing his turn. However, with drafting, he was able to pick cards that he could plan short and long stragies for. I love the MIlestones and Awards. I enjoy the variety of the board (4 if you count the board only expansion) which changes up the terrain, Milestones, and Awards. I think with multiple plays, a 2 player game can fall between your time limit.

We played Ares Expedition yesterday, it was fun but a bit long for what it is. Afterwards we played two games of Race for the Galaxy in less overall time. RftG and Villages of Valeria are the same experience but faster play and less fiddly.
