Thanks for putting out this video! It seems that thousands of people have had this smelly problem. I believe that there must be something wrong with the design of the air box because so many people have had problems. There is no problem with the drain tubes, because no one has ever said that they found water pooling when they removed their cabin filters and their lower filter has never been soaking in water. I always turn off my AC and up my fan to it's highest setting before I get home. That way things get completely dry before I turn off the car. Tesla was supposed to have the car run the fan for a little while after you have left the vehicle, at least I thought that was in a software update.

Good point about letting the fan run after turning off the A/C couple minutes before arriving at destination. Will try it.

Yeah, I remember hearing about that software update a while back. I’ve got no clue if it actually happens. Going to Tesla tomorrow to pick up my car from service… I’ll try to remember to ask someone. Specifically I’m curious if the newer models with the bio hazard filter system is any better or worse

@@Hildepedia I have never looked inside a new Model Y to see if it still has the internal filters as well as the large passenger car air filters. I have noticed that sometimes my cabin fan keeps running after I leave my car. That would dry it out.

The stink continues, and I doubt it gets very dry around here in our humidity with the fans running after I park my car. Sometimes I can see the fans running for well over an hour, it's ridiculous... and then I get back in my car and it smells terrible as soon as the AC comes on. I have to drive with windows down for about 2 minutes every time, it's pretty sad.

One theory I've heard for the reoccurring smell is it's because they put the cabin filter right up against the evaporator, so all that moisture gets soaked up in the filter material. I've had several other cars where the filter is in the glove compartment and they haven't had this issue.

Quite often with heat pumps on your house when they're low on freon for coolant whatever it uses the evaporator gets too cold it freezes up. Then you're going to lose your cooling. Of course on the next drive that probably gives it time to thaw out. I would imagine the air coming for the vents would be a little less strong in the hissing is probably the system not working properly. I bet if it was freezing up air flow is severely restricted through the evaporator which is going to cost sort of mildew and too much water to be left. Other options are generally turning the AC off and leaving the fan on high for a couple minutes before you park the car helps to dry out everything. It's the parking and leaving everything kind of damp inside but exacerbates the smells. Good that you fixed it though

When I was 12yo my dad taught me "NEVER leave the AC running until you park the car. ALWAYS run VENTILATION only 2-3 minutes before parking". That's it, Teslas have this overheat protection, which causes this. THERE IS NO DOUBT!

Did you clean the evaporator and replace the filters at the same time? If the smell is already kicking, you have to knock it back first.

I can't speak for Lysol, but I can tell you with both of our Teslas, the smell was terrible until we used DWD2 cleaner, replaced the filters, and installed the clip in the correct place. We're going on a year of no smell in either now. I'd recommend trying the cleaner that's designed for the job, replacing the filters, and making sure you have the clip installed in the correct place: everyamp.com/pages/instructions-cabin-air-filter-moisture-barrier-clip-tesla-model-y-3

This has always worked for me. If the AC used frequently, always run the AC off with the fan running for at least 15 minutes before turning off any vehicle. I've done this for years with many vehicles and have never had a smell issue in any of my cars, including my Model 3. But I have had an issue when turning on heat with the AC on, so it's not so cold, in my Model 3 and the heat never comes on and only cold AC air comes out.

Of course it's mold and bacteria as it's a wet warm environment for them to grow, this happens on any AC unit, business, house or vehicle. Turn off the AC at least 15 minutes prior to turning off any vehicle and run just the fan and bam...the problem is solved.

@@18837dc It's not that hard if you turn it off prior to reaching your destination. But if it is, then deal with the mold and bacteria build up, because it will happen with every AC unit, car, home and business. Think about it...moisture and heat breed mold and bacteria.
