Get educated, regardless if you step on the brake pedal or let off the gas pedal the regenerative brake will be applied, then you apply the brake pedal if a full stop is needed. If the car did not come to a full stop, then the young driver didn't know how to drive an electric car with a regen-braking system. Same thing for manual and automatic transmission.

@@zoron9102 This is highly debatable based on his demonstration and the few short clips of his driving here. First of all, not only is his left hand off the steering wheel during almost all of his driving time, he places his left hand on his right thigh, crossing his body, meaning there is no way he can rapidly respond w/ his left hand if he suddenly needed to. Then, about the braking, even a regular gas car will decelerate when the accelerator is let go, but drivers will still move their foot above the brake pedal while that happens in case added deceleration is suddenly needed. In the demonstration, he let go of the accelerator but his foot is still above the accelerator and not above the brake pedal (and there's clearly a brake pedal there). That means the car is in charge of the max deceleration, not him. He is controlling the acceleration, not the deceleration, because his foot is over the accelerator, not the decelerator. If something or someone suddenly appears in front of the car and additional deceleration is needed immediately, he could not immediately slam the brake because his foot is above the wrong pedal. But but but, what about automatic collision detection systems, you might interject. As Uber's accident w/ the bicyclist and numerous Tesla collisions with emergency vehicles and truckbeds have shown, automatic collision detection is not infallible. A driver must be ready to immediately brake. In an emergency, that ability is going to be 98% muscle memory that is honed by repetition which he won't have. Worse yet, in a sudden emergency, he may reactively slam down on the accelerator instead in his surprise. I think there is a strong case here that he should have failed and have to re-do it again after he irons out the bad habits.

I think it is a valid point that the DMV made. They need to know that someone can drive the car, and move their foot to the brake petal smoothly. I think the DMV might consider requiring applicants to set their regenerative braking to the low level, and also turn on creep mode. The car will then drive almost identically as a normal car, and that is good. I don't think they should give drivers licenses to people that will likely also drive a gas car without knowing how they will do. Getting a drivers license is way too easy in the US, and many people die from bad drivers. In Germany for example, it costs thousands of dollars to go to driving school, which is much more involved for safety, and if a person fails, they have to wait at least a year to retake the test.

My car will downshift when hitting the break but I will still maintain on the brake lightly just so people know I'm slowing down. Yes you could lift off the accelerator completely and come to a stop but unless you let go at the exact right time you will either stop way short or have to use the brake pedal. @@nunyabizness5343 Except regenerative braking DOES take just as much skill as regular braking and it’s something the car does by default. The car literally doesn’t have an engine it has an electric motor that moves when a current is applied to it. As soon as the current is reduced (by slightly relieving pressure on the accelerator) the car will slow down and if you take your foot off the accelerator it will quickly come to a complete stop. There’s no need to use the brake pedal unless you need to stay at a complete stop or need to stop the car extremely fast (as in an emergency).

Pull up to your driving test in a Tesla and I'd fail his ass too. Kids don't deserve nice cars.

This just shows how stupid some people are. If the cars stopped, why do you have to put your foot on the brake? Suggest not to take Tesla to the test is like suggesting to ride a horse to the test. In US, cops do not know the laws, DMV does not know cars.

I wish kids would learn to drive using a brake pedal.

Very good, technically improved and so do our DMV and it rules. This time everyone in the positive side and therefore it is a win win to everyone.

I think Tesla should have this feature called learners mode a feature temporarily disables all high tech features for the driving test and make it drive like a normal car and when you passed the test then you can put it on normal mode with all the regenerate braking and autopilot and other high tech feature

Its not "auto brakes", electric cars just naturally slow down when the motors arent powered.
