Oh what a kick in the guts. I've been limping along in a 2003 ford truck for years waiting for CT. When it was announced it had great prices, and it was going to be easy, it's just bending sheet metal, like what's been done for a century. Today Musk said ... It's going to be hard to make it affordable, because its an entirely new manufacturing process. And for context, earlier he told us that the low end teslas that are now a bit below the industry average selling price of a new vehicle - are 'affordable'. That average is around 20% more than what the cheaper CT was announced at.
@SyntheticSpy
Жыл бұрын
He meant affordable relative to their past prices and the average US sales price. They are still planning the $25,000 car, so they are clearly aware that many people cannot afford something at that price range
@mobiuscoreindustries
Жыл бұрын
Musk didn't say that it was going to be hard to make it affordable, but that it was going to be hard to make it efficiently. If it follows the trend of all the vehicles that came before it, it will likely start it's production ramp with sub standard margins (still positive most likely) and for the first year or two will focus almost exclusively on raising volume and degrease production cost. The price itself will likely be in the range of similar class of vehicles but deliver more value for that price. As production improves and scales, cost to manufacturing drops down and Tesla will likely start increasing their margin as demand for the vehicle grows. Once they have reached this they will start to action their control levers like they do with current models, which they will do based on market condition but with a general trend to make the vehicle either better or more affordable, generally both. The cybertruck is entering the market at a particularly harsh crunch time. Combined with the step change in construction, it is more logical to essentially align with industry prices and focus on ramping rather than potentially shoot one self in the foot with prices too low to cover the investment demand while generating a ton of orders you can't actually service. Better to keep wait times lower and gradually action demand levers such as lowering prices as production accelerates to keep demand in line with the amount of stuff you are making

@mobiuscoreindustries

@@KenLord I mean there is a difference between making it and selling it. The production side of things is the same reason why the M3 ramp was hellish. The car itself was selling at a low enough price on the customer side of things but the production cost was very high. Almost everything talked about in the call was about the production side of things. That being said I expect them to start the deliveries of the highest echelon of the offers first, because those ones comparatively have larger base margins and lower demand which compensate for the initial production ramp deficiencies. That being said I do agree that the cybertruck will have issues hitting it's first release price and probably will not be able to, simply put the original price was too much of a bargain for a manufacturing process so experimental

Good shots! But I must say that when Elon was asked by the CNBC interviewer why did Elon think that he can sell Teslas at cost and make a profit on them later on, Elon cited "Tesla Uber", but did NOT mention all the profits that could come from people just wanting FSD to drive them around (via one-time purchase or monthly fee). I think the public would understand the feature aspect of FSD before they could wrap their heads around their car being a Tesla Uber. A missed opportunity by Elon IMO.

After awhile they got all those things ironed out and mow the screens move. You can also get an aftermarket kit that enables the factory fixed position to be adjustable by force that came out once people found that all the cars had the articulating bracket.

By what definition does this thing have an exoskeleton?
@mobiuscoreindustries
Жыл бұрын
I believe since they have made great advances in casting they have moved back to a body on frame design (but with a generally tougher exterior) to leverage their better casting experience. The initial plan was to have the exterior panels have load bearing abilities which would make it an exoskeleton design, though I am sure they ran into issues with it on the crash test stand because that meant the risk of the "frame" deforming on lower energy collisions. So far the intent seems to be to have a full front and back casting (with the rear casting being fucking gigantic) and a structural battery, then the exterior panels still being made of stainless enable the same resilience to light damage but would not carry the same repairability issues as an exoskeleton system would. Time will tell once the teardown of that happens
@DanielASchaeffer
Жыл бұрын
@@mobiuscoreindustries It's more of a unibody design than body-on-frame, but, I agree that it's not exactly an exoskeleton. You could argue that a super wide structural battery pack is a "frame" in the classic pickup truck sense and might be stronger/stiffer than two long steel rails running the length of the car. I still think the truss design could add a lot of stiffness and the stainless exterior could be adding to that truss but the rest of that stainless armor strikes me as just dead weight..

Not sure what to think about the polarized rearview mirror...Certainly it could be a screen, but if it's not why polarize it? I've just never heard of a polarized mirror...I mean, what would be the point right? Especially since that's the front surface of the mirror (the glass), the light would be polarized, then reflected which would maintain the polarization, then go back through the polarized glass again, then to you. Now that I've thought about it for far too long, I think you're right, it's most likely a screen.
