James is a legend but I don't think Dave is truly understanding or appreciating the advances being made in the AI industry and the rate of acceleration those advances are happening lately. As systems analyst John Gall once wrote, "A complex system that works is invariably found to have evolved from a simple system that worked." Tesla's self-driving system WILL be (more) complex, but the approach of simplifying sensor input by avoiding LIDAR and dropping radar, along with James' example of simple left turns before layering complexity, shows that Gall's law has been taken to heart by the Tesla self-driving team. Companies pursuing alternative self-driving systems would do well to consider whether their investment might be more productive elsewhere, then license Tesla's system when available. If they want to be around when it is available.

My experience, FSD Beta is awesome except when it isn’t - school zone speed limits, stopped school buses, creeps too far forward for some left or right turns, too fast over speed bumps, potholes, confusion over what is or isn’t the road when lines are varied in colors and strength. However, I’m amazed at what it does easily. I’ve had many drives where I don’t intervene.

These are great! People keep saying Tesla had a lead in data, but they envision data as some big box of data that Tesla has that no one else has. Like, if someone would steal that box, then that advantage would be gone. I think this is the wrong way of thinking about it, and this talk was super informative regarding that. I think Tesla's lead is at least one level higher, for lack of a better word on my part: the data infrastructure level. The ability to get and use exactly the data they need at that point in time to improve their AI. Both in quantitative terms (their fleet size and recorded miles, I'd say their coverage of the problem space), but also in qualitative terms as per their ability to filter for the data they need. For instance, edge cases and situations where their AI is proven to be wrong. The ability to determine which data is and is not valuable is, I think, more important than the total size of the box. So yes, Tesla has a lead in data, but not in the way many people (investors mainly) think they do. Furthermore, this data monster feeds itself in a circular way. It uses data to improve its understanding, and uses that understanding to improve both the quality of the data it devours and how well it utuilizes this data. They also get to use the data through time. Whereas most of google's data is generally useless after a year, Tesla can run and test improved parts (subroutines?) of the AI against all data gathered in the past and compare the performance of the subroutine to the previous version. Furthermore, by combining data of multiple cars driving the same parts of the world, Tesla can generate a very valuable model of 'the truth'/the real world. This 'truth' I think, is invaluable to be able to instantaniously assess the quality of any individual car's observations and deductions made against this model of the 'truth' that's floating around in the cloud and be able to learn from it. For many instances, you'll no longer need a human to tell if a certain deduction/assessment is correct. After all, it's what we humans do whenever we encounter a surprising situation on the roads: we sleep badly about it, relive that situation in our head and by doing so, retrain the way we think, and maybe next time we prevent this situation from happening.

@ sure, a bot that can go shopping for you is a way off yet, but there are bots for sale now that can do basic warehouse moves. I reckon the biggest use case for the bot is driving a "dumb" car. Hey there Dave and James - firstly, thanks so, so much for your ongoing FSD discussions and analysis, which are significantly more indepth than anyone else's. Secondly, I wanted to sound you out about forward looking infrared (FLIR). Have you previously discussed whether this (or indeed other systems) should be used to bolster Tesla's FSD efforts? I have a very strong hunch that cameras alone aren't the full solution (e.g., they can easily become obscured, they can't see heat signatures so they are relying on vision alone). For all of his quirks, Sandy Munro is very, very rarely wrong and I recall him strongly urging Tesla to start using FLIR to take their FSD to the next level (I believe he called FSD "absolute crap without FLIR" - classic Sandy honesty/assessment!). What are your thoughts? Do you think Tesla needs another vision system in addition to just cameras? FLIR? Radar? Something else? I'm fascinated to hear your thoughts, as this feels like a potential flaw for FSD and I want Tesla to win this race....win it fast....win it comprehensively...and win it sustainably....as the implications for FSD, robotaxis, bot and GAI are quite obviously MASSIVE. Thanks so much for any insights that either of you might have. Cheers, Dave (Australia).

I don't know about needing a theory of mind but it seems clear camera and computer upgrades will be needed.
