I wanted to share with you after watching your vid and another of a young man taking a busted rack completely apart, I had the same exact issue as you and decided to pull mine and take it apart and clean and re grease it myself. I did a couple days ago and it fixed the issue completely. Thank you for sharing. You saved me a few hundred bucks too. Just smashed my thumb putting the rack back in lol.

The last letter on the part number is the version. For example if the part number is 1233454-00-A that’s the first version and part 1233454-00-B is the second version, etc. For the most part, as long as the first numbers are the same then the parts are interchangeable.

Well that's interesting I get what you mean now with the problem you were having. Glad you got it figured out and good idea swapping the motors I thought that could be done on a broken rack. Enjoy it, I have put 50k miles on mine over the past year and wouldn't want to daily drive anything else!

Thank you for making this video! I hit a curb and I think something broke or worked loose in the rack & pinion. I already replaced an inner tie rod and was also surprised there was no retaining washer to keep the socket from working loose. I will plan on re-using the existing motor as you found out. It looks incredibly easy to swap the whole rack, thanks again.

Hi Roman nice projects you have here, I got an issue with model 3 I’m rebuilding now, on screen it shows wheels fully turned to the right when they are actually straight and car pulls to the left because it’s trying to straighten it self electronically. I did try taking steering wheel off and spin the slip ring with my finger it does alow two full turns but then it conflicts with other steering angle sensor which is on steering rack and that’s where my issue coming from
@akindiyrebuilds6223

I’m not sure, but I would think steering angle sensor needs to be calibrated.

Thanks for your videos on Teslas! We just bought our first (after years of LEAF ownership) and I'm considering buying a second as a fixer upper. I used to work on cars and motorcycles a lot, and would like to get back to it! One question, have you had troubles insuring your salvaged Teslas?

No. I never had problems insuring any salvage cars.

I watched a tear down of the Model 3 rack and pinion on KZitem a while back and the auto-steering motor moved the rack via a belt. Wonder what happens when the car is performing the steering and something in that motor/belt assembly fails? Does the car ask the driver to immediately take over? If they do not, I assume the car would stop possibly in the middle of the road?
@akindiyrebuilds6223
Жыл бұрын
I don’t know for sure since I never had a broken belt on me in the steering. But I am assuming if that would happen, you would definitely get an error message on the screen, but I would think you would still be able to drive it though steering would be very stiff.

I’m in the SF Bay Area. I have a model S 2014, with no power steering. I believe the problem is with the motor. According to your video I need to sync the replacement motor with the mod S. Please let me know if this is correct and if anyone knows of a Tesla mechanic in the SF Bay Area that could do the sync.

Bought a M3 RWD (46K miles) from an auction with the front right lower control arm nut broke off so I bought a used control arm (didn't know that I can buy it from Tesla) and replaced it. I noticed the front right wheel toes in a lot and needless to say the car pulls one direction. I tried to open the right outer tie rod and couldn't but I noticed I can rotate the tie rod a little bit to the front and the back on both left and right tie rods. I tested my friend M3 (15K miles) tie rod and they don't move. I tested my 2017 honda civic and it moves just like my M3 so I wonder if that's normal. After test drive a little bit the car seems to be swinging a bit I has DI_a223 traction control disabled, DI_a222 stability control disabled, DI_a178 steering alignment needs adjustments. I wonder if full alignment will fix these issues or is it the steering rack issue?
@akindiyrebuilds6223

As far as ball joints, they can swing back-and-forth by hand, depend on the wear, as long as there is no play, you should be fine. Those error codes went away on mine after a driving it for a little bit. As far as car swinging while you drive it yes alignment can fix that unless it caused by something else.

Does your vehicle still get firmware updates? Typically the vehicle firmware update will include subsystem updates, so if you install a part with an older update the next vehicle firmware update will update that part as well.

Yes I do get updates regularly. But I don’t know if particular update would include particular module firmware update.

@@elconductor23 there is no alignment on motor just a belt tension. But keep an eye on your rack and pinion wheels position so you don’t break a clock spring.
