We are removing the drive unit from our Salvage Tesla we won at a Copart Auction. I'm doing this outdoors in the backyard on grass and dirt with basic tools. We need the drive unit for our 2013 Tesla Model S 85 RWD.
Removing a Tesla drive unit is not hard to do. It's one of the more basic jobs on a Tesla. Make sure to disconnect the Fireman loop and the 12Volt battery before working on the electric vehicle. After disconnecting those there will be no high voltage power coming out of the battery pack anymore, but double check with a voltmeter before touching any high voltage (Orange) cables. Swapping a 2013 Tesla Model S drive unit is a DIY project if you have some mechanical skills. It may require a alignment if the unit is swapped complete with the subframe and suspension. That would be the only thing you probably can't do. But you don't have to take it to a Tesla service center to get an alignment. Most tire shops or any repair shop that has an alignment rack can perform a rear wheel alignment. Since you didn't do anything tot the front and if the EV was going straight with steering wheel in the middle before you would only need the rear adjusted if it pulls to one side. After installing the drive unit in to the other car all you need is to run a software update to "pair" it to the car and if you have Tesla Toolbox available, run a coolant system bleed procedure to make sure no air is trapped in the system. It does work with out the bleed procedure but may take a while for the air to escape and you'll have to check and top off the coolant in the reservoir a few times.
