They have done a good job with the gearing on the tesla - it was leaving that merc for dead between 0-60 (the speeds you normally drive at) - people will bang on about top speed, but when are you ever going to go 180+mph?

once you're going above 10-15 mph or so the merc comes alive, there's a bit of a delay initially before the turbos spool at like 2200 rpm. once they do though hold on... and with that aerodynamic body that physically lowers itself at speed the numbers just keep climbing

The M175 in the AMG is pushing from 620 to 676 HP at the crank, they grossly underrate their HP figures. Probably for insurance reasons or they want to under promise and over deliver or both. Look up Motor Trend M5 Competition Package vs E63 S AMG and they dyno'd the S AMG at 676 HP. This explains why it wins in the second race. The Tesla is also heavier believe it or not.

Enzo Piacitelli Real life is all about turns and stops. Considering how fast the Tesla accelerates from 0-60, it just makes it lot more useful and efficient. Gas cars are very inefficient in city. no, 0-60 is NOT the only thing that matters. those are normal driving speeds, and in normal driving you're not going to be using more than 200 hp anyway. where you need 600 hp is on the track, where speeds are in the 60 - 120 mph range. i would like to see this Tesla compete against the Germans on the Track. yes the Tesla has a great launch - we know that - but it's not everything IMO.
@spdcrzy
9 жыл бұрын
you're right - torque is what matters at highway speeds, and the tesla has an INSANE amount of torque at any speed. it only slows down acceleration-wise at the top end because of its gearing. by 2020, if tesla doesn't make a sub-4000lb sedan with 700+/700+ that's capable of 300+ miles and a 10-second quarter mile, i'll be very surprised.

@User.Joshua
9 жыл бұрын
Sai Namuduri Thing is, it doesn't have "INSANE" amounts of torque at any speeds. The energy conversion through just one gear after just 40mph is sapped tremendously. It needs more gears to fully express the amount of torque the batteries are making. With just 3-4 gears I think this car could be one of the fastest cars on the road; supercars included. However, that sort of complexity would hinder reliability, so I understand why they aren't adding more gears.
@spdcrzy

Joshua Adams compared to any normal road car, it's got more than enough. If this had any performance-oriented gearing at all, it would drain the batteries in a couple hours. It's like high performance battery mode on a laptop.
@UnapologeticGeek
9 жыл бұрын
Joshua Adams actually it doesn't need gears. all it needs is electronics upgrade. since this video they already made it 0.1 second faster ( 0-60 ) through just software upgrade to power electronics. the drop in power at top speed is a limitation of electronics that can't drive enough voltage. this car will get faster in the future due to mainly battery getting lighter and electronics pushing out more voltage, but there is almost no chance of it ever getting gears. having 2 gears was their original plan, but they realized they were better off without them.

E63 AMG S has a significantly higher trap speed, it is the "faster" car - quarter mile times are important, but people really into drag racing should know the car with the higher trap speed is often the faster car, I bet the E63 can take it in a roll race. Any doubt left? Tune the E63 and it will demolish the Tesla. Electric motors are cool, but run out of steam quickly. The torque curve of a twin turbo V8 is much more enjoyable to me at least, and the technological achievement in the M157 and upcoming M177 are pretty incredible, 12k at Weistec or RENNTech will get you 650-700whp.

Run an endurance race, or simply a lap around a track between an E63 and a Tesla P85D or substitute in a CTS V or BMW M5 and watch what happens. In a one lap race the Tesla will get off the line quicker and then slowly fall behind after the first corner. In an endurance race, the Tesla will either overheat, the tires will self destruct, or it will simply run out of energy. While the Model S is a big step for electric cars, it is no match for a true sports sedan
@andrei-lucianserb1771
9 жыл бұрын
PKPhoenix83 I'm not sure it will overheat, I've seen them run on the autobahn at high speeds without any problems. I know it's not the same as a race, but it's still very impressive. The tires have nothing to do with being electric or not. You can put high performance tires on the Tesla as well. And how can the Tesla run out of energy first, if it has an electric motor? Electric motors have close to 100% efficiency, while ICE have 20-30% at best. The reason the Tesla may not have the same range as an ICE, is because it has very little energy on board, compared to the energy in the fuel in a BMW for example. But it uses it much more efficiently, while the BMW is throwing away 75% of the energy. It's as if 75% of the fuel is just dead weight. The BMW will go through it's full tank of gas very fast at high speeds and accelerations.

I love all the comments that glorify electric cars XD Yes, you get full torque from a standstill. Yes, your 0-60 time is stupidly fast. However... After about 80mph your electric car falls flat on its face as it gets dominated by the savage power of the AMG! I can do 1000km on one tank in my 2005 diesel Mercedes. Find me an electric car that can do 1000km on a single charge. Don't get me wrong. The Tesla is a great car. It proves that electric cars can be fun too. It's shaping the future for EVs, but internal combustion engines won't fade anytime soon... I believe hydrogen is the fuel of the future. Both in ICEs and EVs.

If I were to buy a road car, I would buy a Mercedes electric c300. If the production concept gets the green light, the Mercedes will have just as powerful a powertrain as the tesla. It may not be as good in performance, but I would safely say that the point of Mercedes isn't performance, it's affordable and comfortable luxury, which is why they are using softer suspension and focusing on the interior and exterior design along with ride comfort and materials rather than performance. If I were to race around a track and get where I'm going with speed, the tesla is a must-do. If I'm looking for a comfortable and quality car that doesn't cost a fortune and gets just as much as the aforementioned, I would get the Mercedes.

Shit I would love the tesla but it's not worth the amount of money they want. Merc is much better value. Also much longer range and easier to fill up a normal car

Because speed limits are climbing so you need a car that can maintain high speeds for a long period of time and the drain power and would take hours to charge.

For the price I'll take the AMG even over the P100D. P100D may be quicker 0-60 but beyond that its obsolete and I bet on a curvy track Tesla cant perform like the E63s

that "AMG clunker" that beat the tesla on the final run. Those AMGS have been running 11.4 11.3 when LC is used. Tesla is overrated.

yes, we all know that electric cars are faster at the start, but what happens on longer is that the tesla gets fucked!

LotosHans Does not win against these super cars, but fucked is definitely not the right word. I've seen how fast it can reach 155mph, and it's very fast. It has super car acceleration from 0-60, but still has great car acceleration beyond that, on par or better than other cars in it's price range. It will beat the normal non-AMG mercs.

+LotosHans The Tesla has a single reduction gear....and wins. Now imagine it had a 2-gear-box. Then again, it doesn't need it. It won. So, what exactly do you mean by "f***ed"?

The news is only going to get worse for the ICE crowd. Those electric motors in the P85D aren't even running at full power yet. Tesla has already hinted at downloadable updates that will allow 0-60 in 2.8 seconds and it won't stop there. This tells me that the controllers are capable of pushing more current to the motors. The reason the P85D comes with the power limited to 700HP has less to do with the size of the motors and more to do with maximizing range and protecting the battery pack. For non-continuous use (like 1/4 mile sprints), those motors should easily accept being over driven by another 30 to 40% or even more. What limits EV performance is not their motors, its their fuel tanks (battery packs).

Hardly.. As it stands you get more performance for your money with ICE engines. The P85D only has one trick and thats 0-60, which it is matched or beat out by similar priced cars. Yes it is fast, but your paying more for less performance.
@umaralikha

What do you expect with a 700hp car. An E63 S with 700hp from the standard 585hp will beat it.

DTRU122283 What? The E63 S is bought for £60,000 with decent options after easy haggling whereas you can't do that on a Tesla so it ends up costing you £90,000 with no options. The E63 S clearly wins the second race with a quicker time and a higher trap speed on both as the timer starts after the car launches.

***** Electric still has the major issue of range. To get more range with the current technology is a fucktonne of batteries, which still isn't environmentally viable at the moment.
