@@Seventh7Art It’s good that companies like Lucid are trying to compete. We’ve never seen any Lucid models at our local dragstrips, and we are out there every week, sometimes 2-3x/week. We’ve heard that they (currently) lose money on every car sold, which tells us how hard it is to get a new company started. We wish them well and welcome racing one soon. As for running under 9.0, the latest NHRA rules don’t allow that without a cage, and over 150MPH will require a chute. (Okay, they give us a fraction or so over)

@@cwalton56 most people with EVs can appreciate the beauty and sound of gas powered vehicles, especially classics. I used to race classic Vettes (1968 - 1969) and loved racing and driving them. However, gas cars require lots of time wrenching on them while EV performance cars are plug and play. At my current stage in life, I don't have the time to keep wrenching on cars. EV is the best way to get the kick of running 9's in the 1/4 mile without spending time to modify, tune and maintain the vehicle. Fun races. Chuck's 69 Camaro looks like a great example of a dialed-in drag racer. Many of the tweaked hot rods that I've seen at the track can be unreliable and unstable. But the seasoned racers know how to build and tune their drag cars to be consistently fast. I thought it was funny that Chuck said that he was sleeping at the light with a .023, but he has clear gotten accustomed to quicker lights than that with the box. As an aside, it was interesting to see some of the first racing tests of the $250K Lucid Sapphire, where it ran an 8.95 at 154MPH, but most runs were right around 9 flat. So running a 9.16 puts your Plaid in pretty close enough company. Enough so that you could win a drag race against the Sapphire with a good R/T.

We can speak to NHRA rules, but not all tracks are NHRA. Some are IHRA or Outlaw (maybe others). NHRA personal safety gear and tech requirements depend on how fast the car is. For the Plaid: Under 9.99 seconds (6.39 1/8th) or over 135 mph NHRA Competition License (Level 6 or new "Street Legal" class) SFI jacket & pants 3.2A/5 SFI neck collar & gloves 3.3/1 Full Face Helmet meeting Snell or SFI specifications We have our Level 6 license and adhere to all of the above. There is a "Street Legal" classification for 2014 and newer cars with all OEM safety gear intact and unmodified (airbags, seatbelt, brakes). See the description of this video for those details. At a new track for you I'd be a bit suspicious of the track timing if you just set a new record. I listened to the 582 Camaro and heard the low to direct gear shift of the 2-speed Powerglide a bit past the 60-ft mark. It then sounded like it held a high RPM the rest of the way down the track, which indicates it is getting most of its low and mid range gear ratio from a very high stall speed torque converter. He'd likely tell you the stall speed on the torque converter. My guess is it's about 5,000 rpm stall speed. Some readers are likely confused by the use of 2-speed transmissions for drag racing. This setup is minimally using the transmission for low gearing, it's making use of the wide variable gear ratio provided by a drag racing high stall speed torque converter for low and mid range gear ratios. Below its likely 5,000 rpm stall speed the torque converter between the engine and the transmission is creating gear reduction and torque multiplication while the engine output RPM and the transmission input RPM are widely different. A torque converter is very inefficient, turning a lot of energy into heat when providing variable gear ratio, but it can provide very high ratios of gear reduction to provide incredible amounts of low end toque. When at its stall RMP a torque converter is considered to be running a 1:1 gear ratio. It always slips a bit and that is why there are clutched torque converters that lock-up solid so there is no slippage and very little energy loss. This high energy waste makes high speed stall torque converter about 1/2 second slower than an optimally set up manual transmission, clutch and driver on a drag strip. There are no 1,000+ HP rated street derived production manual transmissions. If somebody knows of one I'd like to know of it. That includes upgrade paths for a manual Tremec used in the GM Corvettes, Camaros, Ford Mustangs etc. There are pure race made manual transmissions at over $10,000 people occasionally have used on the street. They have noisy gear lash and are most intended for the 1/4 mile drag racing. Nascar Cup cars use a 4-speed manual race transmission that is likely 1,000 hp rated and more. There was a 24 hour of Lemans experimental car entry that was greatly a Nascar Cup car fitted out Camaro and did have transmission issues. www.nascar.com/news-media/2023/06/11/nascars-garage-56-entry-completes-24-hours-of-le-mans/ Its difficult to get street derived manual transmissions over 600 hp, while street automatic transmissions such as the 2-speed GM Poweglide in race trim can easily reliably handle well over 1,000 hp. The 3-speed GM Turbo 400 in drag race trim is good to about 3,000 hp. A GM turbo 350 is a bit lighter weight than the Turbo 400, but it's far inferior and a pain to live with. We went through five rebuilds of a Turbo 350 on our '73 LeMans station wagon only to find its possible to have Turbo 400 installed in the car. The drag race high stall torque converters are much easier on the drive train than a manual and clutch which includes the engine's crank shaft. Having mechanical gear ratios and starting torque gets increasingly difficult at higher horsepower and is why many higher power machines such as train locomotives use electric transmissions such as Diesel electric locomotive. The 2-speed GM PowerGlide automatic transmission is an absolute dog on the street, but it came into its own as a support system for a high stall RPM drag race toque converter at the drag strip good for over 1,000 hp. There have been Poweglide high hp drag racers with out 1st gear having to run direct gear from the start and they only loose 1/2 second.

Agree on these points. The quickest cars, especially the 1/8th mile racers, are (almost) always on a ‘glide and run converters rated at 4000 and up from there 👍 (All 3 of my Camaros, 327, 350, and NOS 327, had a TH350, but these were relatively mild builds) This dragstrip (Bradenton Motorsports Park) is actually our “home track” for 1/4 mile. It’s the same place we ran our PB of 9.15, as well as our other 9.16, 9.17 and 9.19 recently, etc. We’ve found that tracks can be inconsistent indeed. Our other home track is 1/8th mile only (Showtime), and we generally don’t compare tickets between the tracks 👍

Great question! First it gets a bit faster (as everything heats up), and then it gets a bit slower as the battery gets lower. But on most nights at the 1/4 mile track, when the staging lanes can be an hour or more, all the runs are rather consistent. Several nights recently we've run six 9.20s in a row. No big change in either direction. But the stock OEM brakes can become soft (as with many 150 MPH cars), so we try not to run more than 3 passes per hour when the track is available to do it. There are better aftermarket brakes, but the NHRA ‘Street Legal’ Rules require “Unaltered OEM installed antilock brakes", so that's what we use. For an example of quick back-to-back runs, and how we got faster, see this video: kzitem.info/news/bejne/smef1n6OoX9la2U

Another great Plaid video, Andrew! Don't know if anyone mentioned it but the Unplugged Plaid broke the EV record at Pikes Peak this year with a 7:57 second run, and was about 2 seconds slower than the all time fastest run, and that by a purpose built racer, super light weight! The Plaid used completely stock motors and still weighted over 4700 pounds! The video of that run is on KZitem, if interested. Now all the Plaids need is a more powerful battery pack, as the Plaids powerplants are capable of over 1400HP just the way they are! Any chance of you getting together with other guys who race their Plaids and perhaps once a month have a ALL PLAID dragrace! Quite interested in seeing what other owners do to their cars both performance wise and also customized bodies! Did I see correctly that a new Plaid is available at less than $90 thousand? For that kind of performance it is probably the best STEAL in the GO FAST MARKET!

👍Agree Roy that $90K for 1020HP is an outrageous bargain. As for other Plaids at the dragstrip, we haven’t seen any other lightened ones yet, and most have 21” wheels and many are lowered. Seems like 9.35-9.55 are the common ETs, which means that unless I completely sleep at the light, the race is over as soon as it begins. And yet the margin is not wide enough to give a concession like the move, because a 0.4 second head start would mean I’d need a 9.15 (PB under perfect conditions) and they’d need a 9.55 or higher in order for me to catch them. Unlikely given the same conditions in both lanes. But we continue to search for, and sometimes find, 8- and 9-second cars like this 582ci ‘69 Camaro. Why didn’t I ask his price? Meanwhile we’ve made as many as TWENTY dragstrip runs in ONE 4-hour session. We’ve NEVER seen a 9-second ICE do that. NEVER. Plus, we’ve never had a broken part after almost TWO THOUSAND Tesla timeslips. How many 9- and 10-second cars can say that? Our only maintenance has been one set of brake pads. We’ve still got the original tires on this Plaid even after 18K miles and over 850 passes. Plus, it goes over 350 miles per charge. We’ve never once charged at the track or on the way home, yet we get home with 50% still leftover. Our ICE buddies all have to stop for gas to get home, and get to deal with the late night panhandlers and riffraff. Our experience is superior from start to finish 👍

@@TeslaPlaidChannel Try having one of those electric vehicles where temperatures dip below 35 degrees, and the lower it gets the worse, and useless those electric vehicles become. With a gas engine, you can always find a gas station, and you can drive in all temperatures, and go up to over 550 miles on one tank. And then there is the cost of those inefficient batteries that cost more than an arm and a leg. Your logic is severely flawed like so many these days, and only in your mind it is superior, because your promoting it, and want to get rich like all the other worldly characters off of a product that hasn't been perfected, and is full of flaws. And then there is the issue of where cobalt comes from, and how and who mines it, a story that is very horrible, pathetic, and just totally disgusting of how the technological world practices slavery.

@@hawaii50th 8 years (96 months) or 150,000 mile battery warranty. We’ve never owned a car that long. Most new car buyers don’t own them that long. We’ve owned 6 Teslas now. One of them showed a fault code one weekend. We took it in on Monday and picked it up on Tuesday. They put in a whole new battery for free! In only 24 hours. Like a whole new drivertrain! We replaced the floor mats that same week to complete the “new car” experience. Otherwise virtually no maintenance. No fluid changes. Only tires and wiper blades. Love these cars! (BTW, the oldest one of our Teslas is still being driven by my sister, around 100k miles and going strong.) As for the batteries, all those cell phones that you and your family own (and have ever owned) have them too. Nice hypocrisy there 👍

@@hawaii50th Living in Florida, we could care less about what happens at 35 degrees. We bought what works for us. We aren’t trying to sell than to anyone else. And frankly, anyone who drives their OWN CAR 550 miles or more in a day is just plain dumb. We rent a car (or SUV) for long trips and we let Hertz eat that mileage, maintenance and depreciation. We can go 1000s of miles for just $30-40/day!

We’ve seen many fires at the dragstrip. My buddy’s 5.0L F-150. A few Imports. A Donk. Nitrous motors and others. But never an EV. Not once. Yet there are gullible people who believe the fossil fuel propaganda. They are the same ones who believe everything they hear on the news. Sad really…

More sad is how every Gas- and Diesel-powered car is 27 times more likely to catch fire than *any* EV…but don’t let facts get in the way of your propaganda 🤣 www.motortrend.com/features/you-are-wrong-about-ev-fires

I’d like to see these guys hold a Tesla track day to race like configured vehicles. That way they have a legit measuring stick. Electric vs gas is like Bikes vs cars. Both are cool af but not comparable.

Ha, if the Tesla running a 9.16ET at over 150MPH is garbage, then how about that Camaro and all the other cars, mostly trailered ones, that it demolishes? They must be “worse than garbage” by your logic? 🤔 Two thousand Tesla timeslips with no maintenance other than one set of brake pads. Meanwhile the actual garbage often breaks down in the other lane. This car has been bulletproof at the dragstrip. Never failed to make it down the track. How many 9-second cars can say that? These facts must hurt for you to hear? Facts.
